Warning saga from South of Midnight's Rougarou explained

Becomes a rougarou

Many years before the events in South of midnightHistory, a young boy named Laurent lived with his mother and father in a small community surrounding a mill. Laurent's father worked at the mill and served Scrips for his work, a currency that could only be used for goods among the mill.

When Laurent was still very young, his mother became ill. The mill foreman refused to give Laurent's father the money he needed to treat his wife, and she quickly became worse. The community gathered together and other mill workers chipped in some their own scripts. But no doctor would accept the scripts as payment.

Laurent found out that his mother was mainly intended to die and ran away from home. Laurent was alone in the forest and was finally able to release all anger and worry that had brewed inside him. As Laurent screamed into the darkness, his father rushed to his side. But rather than letting his son express his feelings, Laurent's father said him to shoot them down.

Laurent's mother died and his father fell into a deep depression. With his father who could not take care of them, Laurent took on food and ensuring that they survived. At the same time, Laurent continued to drive his feelings from within and refused to mourn the loss of his mother.

Laurent's suppressed pain and anger continued to simmer until his body could no longer hold it. He confronted the mill foreman and blamed him for his mother's death. The driver did not easily take the attack and threatened the boy. Laurent's father burst into the foreman's office and, when he saw the change, rushed in to protect his son. The driver was enough for the gun which he held behind his desk and shot Laurent's father.

Still just a young boy, Laurent fell on his knees and disappeared. When he arrived, Laurent saw that his hands were soaked in blood, and that his father was moving on the floor in front of him. At that moment, all the deeply rooted anxiety, guilt and shame left that Laurent had pushed down his body in a long, uncontrollable scream, a scream so powerful that it turned him into a rougarou, a giant owl-like animal with glowing yellow eyes.

In Cajun-Folklore, a Rougarou is a werewolf-like creature.

Lives like a rougarou

Laurent eventually transformed back into a human being and, when a little older, joined a bunch of bootleggers at the height of the ban. Laurent tried to live as much of a normal life as he could, which for him meant to push down his feelings and forget his past. But that method rarely works.

Laurent was quick to anger, and a wrong word would cause all the emotions he had lost to spill violently. In these moments, Laurent turned back into a rougarou. The deep debt Laurent considered him to shoot away everyone who came too close, including Hazel and her mother Lacey.
