Some PS5 consoles are hit with another price increase

Players interested in buying one PlayStation 5 just got some bad news, as the price of two refurbished units has now increased. PlayStation 5 fans will have to pay around $100 extra if they are interested in buying most models of the refurbished console.

It's not an easy time to be a gamer interested in buying a console or PC right now. AI data centers creating demand for parts have seen the cost of components like RAM and processors rise, driving up the price of everything from building a PC to buying consoles. So far, these trends show no signs of dying down, which may have prompted some gamers to consider buying used or refurbished systems. Unfortunately, they are also now more expensive, at least if you are interested in a Sony system.

Refurbished PlayStation 5 prices are rising

As discovered on May 1st, the cost of a refurbished PlayStation 5 Slim has now gone up. Previously, you could buy a refurbished PS5 Slim with a disc drive for $449.99, or a digital version for $399.99. These received a significant discount compared to buying the consoles brand new, making them attractive to gamers. Now, however, both have seen their prices increase by $100, bringing the disc PS5 Slim to $549.99, with the digital version selling for $499.99. Both units have a 1TB SSD and come with all necessary cables, a single DualSense wireless controller and a manual, but may have minor cosmetic defects.

While buying a refurbished PlayStation 5 is still cheaper than buying new, that's not much of a consolation for those trying to game on a budget. Back in April, Sony raised the price of the PS5, with brand new consoles costing $649.99 for a standard PS5 with a disc drive, a Digital Edition PS5 costing $599.99, and the PS5 Pro seeing the price increase to $899.99. These increases sting even more when you consider that in 2020 the PlayStation 5 launched for $499.99 with a disc drive and $449.99 without it.

Fortunately, there is still an option that is a bit more affordable and has yet to be affected by the recent price increases. A refurbished original PS5 model with a disc drive is still available for $399.00. This makes it by far the most affordable version of the system, although it does come with 825GB of storage rather than the Slim's 1TB. Gamers who have been putting off buying a system may want to jump on this opportunity before it's too late.

Sony has recently seen huge success with the PlayStation 5, with the console managing to outsell the newer Nintendo Switch 2 for much of 2026. The PlayStation also experienced a spike in sales between late March and early April, although it's believed this was due to consumers trying to buy one before the price increased. Now that the price of both brand new and refurbished units (excluding refurbished original PS5 models) has seen the price rise, it will be interesting to see if Sony can maintain the trend of outselling its competitors.
