The latest beta branch update for Slay the Spire 2 completely removes Doormaker, the controversial boss that became a major source of player frustration ever since its rework. Mega Crit’s first major update for the sequel to its genre-defining roguelike deckbuilder introduced sweeping balance changes, moving the beta branch adjustments into the main build. This update generally increased Slay the Spire 2‘s difficulty curve in higher Ascension tiers while also nerfing “infinite” builds.
Complaints against Doormaker formed the center of Slay the Spire 2‘s second review bombing. Players criticized the reworked Act 3 boss for shutting down too many deck archetypes at once, as it cycles through three debuffs that can prevent card draw, remove cards after they are played, or drain energy from players. Although the boss was oppressive, Mega Crit noted that Doormaker was “slightly weaker than the other Act 3 bosses both in kill rate and damage dealt.” However, the main criticism was how these mechanics restricted builds and made the game less fun.

Slay the Spire 2 Gets New Update for April 2026
Slay the Spire 2 receives a brand-new update in April 2026, introducing fresh additions and changes to the roguelike deck-building game.
Beta patch v0.105.0 removes Doormaker from Slay the Spire 2 and replaces it with a new Act 3 boss named Aeonglass. In the patch notes, Mega Crit noted that Doormaker had “interesting micro decisions in the fight” but that he was “over the complexity threshold of what we want and had lingering issues.” As a result, the devs decided to scrap the boss fight for now and start over fresh. Doormaker will remain in the game’s main build until Mega Crit decides whether to move the beta changes into the live version.
The first impression of Aeonglass is that it’s a more straightforward boss fight compared to the mechanically intensive Doormaker. Without giving away the full encounter, the floating hourglass punishes decks that rely on playing too many cards. However, characters that can exhaust, discard, transform, or take advantage of status cards like Defect’s Flak Cannon build will have a much easier time dealing with Aeonglass’ central gimmick.
The beta update also adds the teased Bestiary feature, giving players an in-game way to review information on the enemies they encountered while ascending the Spire. Aside from the new boss, the patch also includes balance changes, animations and audio for certain cards, new background music for two bosses, and tons of bugfixes, including correcting an infamous bug that breaks multiplayer in Slay the Spire 2.
As always, players are free to join the optional beta branch in Slay the Spire 2 to help test out these changes and provide feedback. To reiterate, the game is in an experimental early access state, so radical changes like removing a boss or overhauling card effects are part of Mega Crit’s process to figure out what works. For players who want bragging rights, now is the best time to beat Doormaker in Slay the Spire 2‘s main build before the controversial boss disappears for good.
