Pokemon TCG Pocket Player discovers that Misty Decks have up to 90 percent profit

Key takeaways

  • Foggy decks in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket can achieve over 90% win by turning heads with the supporter card.
  • Flipping at least one head with Misty results in an 83% win rate, increasing to 91% with three or more heads.
  • Countering Misty decks is challenging due to the randomness; whether the developers will change the card after the release is not clear.

Almost a month after launch, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's meta is starting to take shape. An analysis of over 30,000 battles found that Pikachu ex decks dominate, with Articuno ex, Starmie ex, and Mewtwo ex being the second most prominent cards.

Pokemon TCG Pockets Matchmaking sucks the fun out of the battles

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's branded matchmaking forces you to follow the meta.

But while Articuno ex and Starmie ex aren't at the top of the rankings, one player has figured out how broken they can be, provided you manage to turn heads with Misty.

Misty decks are broken in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket

Players who run Misty decks in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket obviously love a little risk. The supporter lets you flip coins until you hit tails, attaching a water energy for each head flipped. It's a card that, if luck is on your side, will almost certainly turn the battle, and it even has the ability to overcome the curse that goes first.

With much discussion surrounding Misty decks, one Reddit user, 3Questionmarks__, figured out the extent to which the card is broken, and they found that it can result in a win rate of over 90 percent.

3Question Mark analyzed 281 Pokemon TCG Pocket battles, playing Misty in 211 of them. As a general rule, they found that every match where a Misty turned at least a single head resulted in an 83 percent win rate. This rose all the way to 91 percent if lady luck shone on their side and blessed them with three or more heads.

Every match where a Misty turned at least a single head resulted in an 83 percent win rate.

Flipping a head with the first Misty card played is of course the most optimal route to victory, with 3Questionmarks finding a win rate of 80 percent, 88 percent, and 94 percent for one, two, and three heads flipped, respectively. They still won 57 percent of their matches when their first Misty flip landed on tails, but the second landed on heads. Not playing any Misty cards resulted in a win of about 56 percent.

That leaves the virtual TCG in a tricky spot. While counters for Mewtwo ex and Pikachu ex decks have become quite common, it is much harder to counter Misty decks due to the random element alone. Since the physical Pokémon TCG cannot change cards after release, it will be interesting to see if the developers are willing to change the rules as the game progresses.
