Ten years later, I'm not sure any video game trailer has managed to get me quite as excited as the one Niantic used to reveal Pokemon Go. However, the trailer's grand finale still hasn't shown up in-game, but according to a recent data mine, it sounds like that could be about to change.
Coordinated raids are rumored to be coming to Pokemon Go
For those who have forgotten what happens in the Pokemon Go reveal trailer, which is likely because the game is about to turn ten, hundreds of trainers flood Times Square to catch a Mewtwo flying overhead. Yes, there are raids that require trainers to work together in Pokemon Go, but nothing quite on the scale of what was shown at the end of the first trailer.
According to The Pokemod Group, we can finally get that, or something close to it, in Pokemon Go via a data-mined discovery called coordinated raids. The dataminer claims that coordinated raids will add a new level of raiding unlike anything we've seen so far in Pokemon Go. They will require tons of trainers to take down incredibly powerful Pokemon by working together.
These trainers will then need to use a special attack when the raid Pokemon's HP is low enough to finish it off. To use the attack, Trainers must hold their units high in unison, just like they do in the trailer to defeat Mewtwo. They then collectively hold their breath to wait for confirmation that Mewtwo has been caught.
This, again, is similar to what Pokemod claims will happen in coordinated raids. There won't be a standard catching minigame where you have to throw a Poke Ball. It will be an automatic mechanic that, like initiating the coordinated special attack, can also be determined by trainers holding their phones in the air at the right time.
If we get coordinated raids, when might they appear?
The data mine doesn't reveal when exactly Pokémon Go players can expect to see coordinated raids appear, whatever they may be, but there are some big events coming up. Most notably Pokemon Go's tenth anniversary which will likely coincide with this year's Go Fest. The Pokemon Night Out events could be a good place to debut the new raid type as well, as there will be a lot of Pokemon fans gathered in one place, which is what the raids need to work.
That is if all this information is correct, of course. As always, leaks should not be taken as concrete information until an official announcement is made. While there are signs pointing to coordinated raids hidden in Pokémon Go's data, that doesn't mean the plans will manifest. Getting something we were promised by a trailer before the game even launched ten years later would be pretty cool though, and probably bring a lot of lapsed players back to Pokemon Go.
