Monitorings hot streak has been undeniable, but unfortunately it just came to an end. While the Reign of Talon relaunch and removal of 2 from the hero shooter title gave players a huge boost, and Season 2 kept the momentum going by bringing back hero cards and another new hero via Sierra, fans of the game are upset. It has long been expected that the 2026 anniversary event would be a special one, as it is 10 years since Monitoring made his debut. It's a big milestone, but even so, the anniversary event doesn't feel nearly as special as fans expected. And when players complain that Blizzard is letting them down, NetEase has a chance to swoop in and steal the spotlight.
Really, Monitoringthe failure could not have been more perfectly timed for its competition. Not only is NetEase hot off another neat PvE mode in Blood Hunt, and a fun asymmetrical multiplayer mode based on the original Avengers movie, but its season 9 trailer was a real stunner. Alongside a gorgeous new art style that made the action look particularly flashy, the long-awaited debut of Cyclops was confirmed. In addition, the Devil Dinosaur Vanguard role provides a much-needed win, not to mention a hit pass with a number of amazing cosmetics aimed at the fighting hero category. All this quality content, along with a flaw Monitoring event, can be just what Marvel Rivals needed to resume their war for the Hero Shooter's crown.

Overwatch is just 3 steps away from putting the final nail in the coffin of Marvel Rivals
With Overwatch delivering win after win lately, it's easier than ever to imagine a world where the gap becomes too big for Marvel Rivals to overcome.
Overwatch's disappointing anniversary event highlights one of Marvel Rivals' key strengths
MonitoringThe 10th Anniversary Event includes the following rewards to collect:
-
15th Anniversary Lootboxes
-
3 Lootboxes earnable via community challenges each week (1 of each rarity)
-
21 “classic hero skins”
-
33 business cards and icons
-
5 weapon charms
-
3 earnable titles
On paper, this looks like a solid enough event – perhaps not quite as special as one would hope for from a 10th anniversary celebration, but hardly worth all the outrage that has surfaced online. But the community's complaints make more sense when you look more closely at the incident. For starters, despite being advertised separately, the anniversary loot boxes don't work like they used to. Instead of players having chances at premium skins from across the year in these boxes – which is how commemorative boxes used to work in the original Monitoring — the boxes simply contain all the rewards. So instead of being something separate to hunt, players just draw the event items in a random order via the loot boxes.

Things only get more disappointing when analyzing the shells, which act as purple and white recolors of the base Overwatch 2 models. Since they're available for the game's original hero lineup and described as “classic” — the same label used for the hit Overwatch Classic mode that takes nostalgic players back to older versions of the Game of the Year winner — many assumed they'd be recolors of the game. OW1 models instead. This expectation, along with the fact that many players dislike the skin's design (Tracer's advertised outfit looks much nicer than the other recolors, which literally split the purple and white color scheme in half) has made players even more confused by the event. And to top it all off, three earned loot boxes a week feels like a letdown after events like Play Like Luka or the recent Junkrat loot hunt, which showered players in regular loot boxes.
MonitoringThe 10th anniversary event was a chance to reward its most dedicated players who were there from day one, perhaps through a special career profile marker, extra rewards, or even just better event skins. At the other end of the spectrum sits Marvel Rivalsthat nails every event it puts out. There's always a special skin that can be earned for free every season, not to mention a free recolor in every event pass, ensuring that all players always have something to chase. Grinding for repainting i Monitoring which most players have seemingly considered ugly, as opposed to getting them as a login reward alongside stacks of proper loot boxes that have a chance to drop the high-quality shop skins, is a clear missed opportunity for a 10th anniversary. It is an obvious example of a thing that Rivals have always done better than Monitoringand about Rivals is lucky enough to thrive for a decade, it can practically be guaranteed that its take on this type of event will be better received.
How Overwatch and Marvel rivals react to this shift in momentum is sure to be interesting
As said, Monitoring Fumbling on the good will it has built up of late could be beneficial for fans of both franchise games. In the case of Marvel Rivalscould NetEase smell blood in the water, doubling down on the types of additions fans are eager to see in the game. More for choppy events with exciting cosmetics could be a way to twist the knife (although, realistically, Marvel Rivals just staying the course on this front would do the trick). On Monitoring side of things, the only good thing about the lackluster anniversary event is that it might make Blizzard do better. Perhaps Team 4 will give players some extra rewards as a “make-good” for the event, or going forward Blizzard may finally Monitoring events more exciting through better earning items. It's been a complaint for a while now, but fans being extra vocal about this event's issues may finally lead to real change. Be that as it may, it is clear Monitoring just tune in Marvel Rivals for success.
