New Resident Evil movie director comments on mixed trailer reactions

Zach Cregger has addressed fans' mixed reaction to the first teaser for his upcoming Resident Evil film, saying he understands that some viewers want a more direct game adaptation while also detailing key reasons why he's not interested in blindly following the source material. The overall situation is familiar territory for video game movies that stretch far beyond Resident Evil franchise.

Premiering late summer 2026, Cregger's Resident Evil centers on a medical courier named Bryan (portrayed by Austin Abrams from Gangster Squad fame) during the worst day of his life. Instead of recreating the plot of a specific game, the film uses the series' breakout-heavy universe as a basis for an original survival horror story. Although Cregger had long signaled that the project would be a looser adaptation, that message began to fully register with some fans only in late April 2026, when his upcoming Resident Evil the film got its very first teaser trailer.

Cregger acknowledges fan criticism of his Resident Evil film

In a May 18 Interview Magazine feature featuring Cregger himself, the filmmaker discussed a variety of topics with American actor and horror director Curry Barker. When the conversation turned to his next release, Cregger reiterated his optimism about the final product, while also admitting that the film isn't what all fans have been hoping for. That divide has been evident in the highly polarized online reactions to Creggers' revelation Resident Evil project. “There are so many people who obviously really want the video game,” the filmmaker said, noting that this demographic isn't exactly receptive to “something different.”

Resident Evil Director Says He Underestimated The Hardest Fans Of Capcom's Games

Although he understood where the complaints were coming from, Cregger signaled that he was still surprised by their intensity. “I didn't realize how passionate some people were [about only wanting a highly faithful adaptation],” the director said. Loud as it may be, the divisive discourse resulting from the project is far from unique. Complaints about authenticity come with the territory because of the nature of adaptations: a piece of media must be popular enough to be adapted, and anything that meets that condition is likely to have some vocal fans with strong opinions about what might be harmful to a new format and what might be harmful changes. Cregger therefore faces a significant challenge: he's making a movie for an audience with strong ideas about what Resident Evil should look like, while openly opposing a strictly faithful version of that mission. However, he insists he has a good reason for doing so.

Why Resident Evil (2026) wants to be its own thing

Despite dealing with a tough crowd, Cregger is steadfast in his vision for what's next Resident Evil film. He said that a simple retelling of the games would not be creatively satisfying for him, while also arguing that such a film might not satisfy the most dedicated fans as much as they expect. From his perspective, the better way is not to blindly reproduce Capcom's storylines, but to augment them with fresh characters while staying true to their themes and atmosphere. Whether that philosophy resonates with the general public in this particular case will be clear shortly, as the film is slated to hit screens on September 18, 2026.

The divisive project will debut as the eighth live-action film in the franchise and the first since Welcome to Raccoon City restarted Resident Evil cinematic universe in 2021. Although the creative team behind the new film is completely different from the one responsible for its immediate predecessor, Robert Kulzer remains the franchise's one constant behind the camera, with the German-born Hollywood veteran attached to the project as a producer.
