Of all the video game genres, RPGs are the ones that change and evolve the most. Because of how wide the space is, there's so much room for innovation and new ideas to blossom, and over the past few months it's become pretty clear that the push for revolution is far from abating.

5 Action RPGs coming to PS5 very soon
Don't worry, PlayStation 5 owners, you can get your hands on these exciting and action-packed RPGs soon enough.
2026 has already proven to be an incredible year for games across the board, but when you zoom in on RPGs specifically, the level of quality and amount of progress made is pretty hard to match anywhere else in the industry. Whether players are interested in turn-based strategies or real-time action, there's sure to be a new game unlike anything they've experienced before.
The focus is on incredible RPGs released earlier in the year; however, we will bring two upcoming titles which has a 2026 release date.
Obviously we have no way of knowing if they will be 10/10 masterpieces, but they are incredibly promising.
Fit the 9 games into the grid.

2026 RPG masterpiece
Esoteric Ebb
Flaws are the way
Details:
-
Dialogue options have a big impact on failures and mistakes
-
Investigation becomes the primary way forward
Esoteric Ebb approaches RPGs from an unusual angle by emphasizing flawed characters rather than power fantasies. Conversations are heavily based on personality traits, social awkwardness, and botched interactions, turning otherwise game-breaking mistakes into meaningful outcomes instead of punishments that keep the story moving forward all the time.
The detective-inspired structure also shifts the focus away from constant combat, adding a more psychological element to the game that allows it to stand out from the crowd of more action-heavy titles. Since my time playing, I've been pleasantly surprised by how well thought out the contradictory and failed paths are, and at no point did I feel like I needed to replay a segment, at least until my second playthrough.
The Escape from Ever After
Childhood wonder on another level
Details:
-
Narrative satire that is very self-aware
-
Familiar archetypes combined with a more comedic style
The Escape from Ever After uses classic fairy tale imagery to explore themes of exploitation, corporate control and social collapse, all while keeping it lighthearted and fun throughout. Fantasy worlds might normally be treated as a form of escapism, but here they are reshaped into worlds shaped by economics and power structures, bringing them closer to reality and allowing players to engage with both sides at once.

Is it really worth replaying a 100 hour RPG on New Game Plus?
A 100 hour RPG is a bit of a commitment to get through, so is it even worth your time to jump in for a second NG+ round? Let's find out.
Mechanically, I found myself smiling all the time, as one minute you're platforming across an icy lake and the next, fighting a giant boss in turn-based battles, so no matter how far into the game you go, you'll always have a new way to play. Due to the constant structural change, the game feels quite experimental, but unlike many other failed attempts, it sticks the landing and manages to maintain its satirical identity, even when exploring the more serious ideas.
Mewgenics
A real cat adventure
Details:
-
Roguelike loop with turn-based RPG gameplay
-
Options for deep construction and object combinations
If I could describe Mewgenics in a word, it would be crazy. The game loop involves raising cats and taking them on a series of action-packed adventures, but as things often do in an Edmund McMillen game, nothing ever goes as planned. The early hours were filled with countless “what is?” and “that's how it works?, like just when you think you've got a handle on the basics, the game throws a new curveball your way.
As the game continues, players will gain access to new classes, each inspired by classics D&D archetypes as fighters and mages, and as the house starts to fill up with more and more cats, the eugenic side of the game starts to get pretty out of control. A roguelite at heart with an incredibly unique take on the RPG genre, if you're looking for a new gaming addiction, I guarantee Mewgenics is what you need.
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection
Build lifelong bonds
Details:
-
Large-scale collection of creatures
-
Streamlined gameplay that opens the doors to more players
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection expands Monster Hunter universe even further through a much more narrative-driven experience that feels more accessible and streamlined than ever. Bonding with monsters has become a much more integral part of the game, as it directly affects the player's combat abilities, traversal, and strategic options across the world.
One of the biggest things I noticed is how the environments are decided, being semi-open world rather than completely open-ended, which keeps the flow of content much more cohesive, while still leaving plenty of room for exploration. In many ways, it moves monster-collecting RPGs towards a more modern feel, where the action is more responsive and there are fewer obstacles in the way when it comes to actually being immersed in the story.
Crimson Desert
What does this game not have?
Details:
-
Everything from base building to kite flying
-
Huge game variations in a gigantic world
Before Crimson Desert even launched, players called it a revolutionary RPG that would shake up the entire open world going forward. Now that the game is out in the wild, it's safe to say that statement mostly came true, as it's pretty hard to find a mechanic, idea, or playstyle that doesn't exist in the world.

The 10 Greatest CRPG Masterpieces of All Time, Ranked
CRPGs aren't going away, as evidenced by these incredible masterpieces from Daggerfall to Baldur's Gate 3.
Scale is the big draw, because once you unlock some mobility and can take to the skies, the level of freedom is virtually unmatched in the genre. I was amazed at how much content and how many things there were to do, spending hours fighting mobs and bosses, then planting crops and even petting a few cats along the way. When it comes to modern open world games, Crimson Desert really leading the charge.
Promising upcoming RPG
Phantom Blade Zero
More than another soulmate
Details:
-
Unique techniques tied to each weapon
-
Heavy martial arts influence
Phantom Blade Zero may look like just another Eastern Souls-like, but the combat, story, and world-building are far from typical. Playing as a soul, you only have 66 days left to live, during which time players must fight their way through virtually everything that moves, collide with blades, and jump into action to uncover the truth behind the death sentence.
The reason the game looks so unique is its dedication to fighting styles and the inspiration that guides them. Based on authentic Kungfu and Wuxia styles, players get to use a variety of weapons, each with their own moves and combos, and without being tied to a specific path, they are free to take on the role of a true warrior fighting to the last breath.
The Beast of Reincarnation
Far from Game Freak's Comfort Zone
Details:
-
Mix of turn-based and real-time battles
-
Both human and dog attacks
Game Freak is perhaps best known for a small series of games called Pokémonbut now it's branching out into new territory with its latest project, The Beast of Reincarnation. The world is fantastic, combining technology and nature into one, where everything from the environment to the creatures within it is covered in contradictions, creating a unique aesthetic that leans towards the apocalyptic nature of the universe.
From a gameplay perspective, players will get to use both real-time and turn-based combat to take on the mountainous threats that lie ahead, but luckily, they won't have to do it alone, with their trusty dog Koo by their side, who will help them out when the going gets tough. I, for one, am incredibly hyped, because I love when games mix genres, and I'm always on the lookout for new ARPGs that really break the mold.
