Most Obscure One Piece Lore

Important takeaways

  • Devil Fruits only grant powers to the first person to consume them.
  • Hanafuda, the “King of the Lizards”, was replaced by Kuma as a new warlord over the sea.
  • The Straw Hat Pirates' refrigerator has a special code of 7326, and it was set by Sanji.

Eiichiro Oda is a master of world building, and One Piece is a perfect example of his talents. Set in one of the richest and most complex fictional worlds ever created, this goofy pirate manga truly puts most of its contemporaries to shame. The thing is, it's very easy for small details to get lost in a universe as massive as this.

8 One Piece Villains Who Need Redemption Arcs

Sometimes villains get a second chance, and these particular villains in One Piece really need a good redemption arc.

Oda does not reveal every single detail in the main manga, choosing to reveal important information in supplementary material, such as Vivre cards or SBS columns. The world of One Piece is so deep that there is a lot of obscure knowledge that most fans are unaware of, and these are some of the most fascinating examples of this phenomenon.

1 What happens when two people eat the same devil fruit

One of the many mysteries surrounding this peculiar power system

Masked Deuce and Portgas D. Ace on the cover of One Piece novel A.

  • Revealed in: One Piece Novel A

Devil Fruits are the main power system for One Pieceand they have time and again proven to be strange and unpredictable. There are still many unanswered questions about them, but there is one in particular that was answered in Portgas D. Ace's novel series, One Piece Novel A.

While stranded on the island of Sixis, Ace and Masked Deuce shared Mera Mera no Mi. However, to their surprise, only Ace gained pyrokinetic abilities from the Devil Fruit as he ate it seconds before Deuce, who was left completely powerless. This confirmed that even though multiple people can consume a single Devil Fruit, it will only grant supernatural powers to the first person to take a bite.

2 The former sea warlord who was replaced by Kuma

Meet Hanafuda, the king of lizards

Hanafuda, the Lizard King, as seen in SBS in Volume 109.

  • Revealed in: SBS Volume 109

At one point in the story, it is revealed that Portgas D. Ace defeated a Warlord of the Sea four years prior to the start of Luffy's journey and that this mysterious figure was replaced by Bartholomew Kuma. For years, fans thought they knew the identity of every single pirate who earned the title of Warlord of the Sea, so hearing about this mysterious, unseen character was quite baffling.

Fortunately, Oda recently revealed who this defeated warlord is: His name is Hanafudaand he is also known as the “King of the Lizards.” What is particularly interesting about him is that he shares many similarities with the members of the Beasts Pirates as he focused on collecting Ancient Zoan-Type Devil Fruits, and he is named after a type of Japanese playing card. Did he have any connection to Kaido's crew? And more importantly, will he appear in the main story at some point?

3 The Straw Hat refrigerator has a special code

Sanji's most challenging mission

The Thousand Sunny's kitchen.

  • Revealed in: SBS volume 46

Since they are the main characters of the series, Oda has gone out of his way to think about every single detail about the Straw Hat Pirates and their home/ship: The Thousand Sunny. And one of the funniest yet most obscure articles of all One Piece is related to their refrigerator, of all things.

One Piece: Luffy's 7 Most Important Fights, Ranked

Luffy has grown a lot as a character, but he couldn't have gotten to where he is now if these epic battles hadn't taken place.

The Straw Hats refrigerator is not only completely locked, but it even has a special code set by Sanji to prevent Luffy from stealing and eating food. This code is 7326, a number that can be used to spell Nami and Robin's names in Japanese. This is precisely why the female members of the crew are the only others who know it, apart from Sanji himself.

4 Queen has a child, and it could be Franky

An unexpected blood relationship between two cyborgs

Queen and Franky in the One Piece anime.

  • Revealed in: Queen's Vivre Card (#1309)

This is a recent revelation that blew the minds of most fans. According to his individual Vivre card, Queen (whose real name is Scien) fathered a child with an unknown woman thirty-six years ago, whom he abandoned ten years later when he joined Kaido's crew. While the identity or name of this unnamed child was never revealed, fans were quick to note that it may actually be Frankie.

It's all in the numbers: Franky is thirty-six years old, and his parents were pirates who abandoned him when he was ten years old. On top of that, Franky is a cyborg interested in technology, engineering and science, just like Queen. Although Oda never officially confirmed their relationship, all of these details match up far too perfectly for this to be a coincidence. Yet the mere existence of the Queen's unnamed child is already an obscure fact in and of itself.

5 Kalifa's family has a long history with Cipher Pol

A dangerous family business

Laskey and Kalifa (in the anime) and Alpha (in the manga)

  • Revealed in: One Piece Blue Deep: Characters WorldKalifa's Vivre Card (#0375) and SBS Volume 109

Three former members of CP9 were introduced during Nico Robin's flashback, and their leader was Spandam's father, Spandine. It would later be revealed that one of the other agents was Laskeywho is actually Kalifa's father. What's even more interesting is that he was born into a family of assassins that have been part of Cipher Pol for many generations.

Laskey and Kalifa aren't the only prominent members of this murderous family, as the manga recently introduced Alphaa CP8 agent assigned to hold Bonney hostage during Kuma's flashback. In an SBS column, Oda revealed that, as many fans suspected, Alpha is Laskey's daughter and Kalifa's younger sister. It is strange that the specific surname of this family was still not officially indicated.

6 Batchee The Fly

The most obscure One Piece character

Fullbody tries to trick Sanji with the Batchee fly in the manga.

  • Revealed in: One Piece Blue: Grand Data File

A series as massive and comprehensive as One Piece has a huge cast of diverse characters and strangely, Oda has managed to come up with names for almost every single one of them, even those who appeared briefly in a panel. But the most obscure and funny One Piece character is nothing but Batchee the fly.

Family

One Piece: 5 characters modeled from pop culture

Oda has modeled some of his characters on figures in popular culture. Below are some examples.

Remember when Fullbody tried to do the classic trick of putting a fly in your soup to humiliate Sanji in Baratien? That fly has a name, and it's Batchee. Also, its birthday is July 1st, and funnily enough, it was ranked 112 out of 1,052 in the series' seventh popularity poll. Anime viewers may not recognize Batchee, as the animated adaptation changed his species to a generic brown bug.

7 Panda Man

The most elusive character in One Piece World

Pandaman, Tomato Gang and Unforgivable Mask in the manga.

  • Revealed in: SBS Volume 6, SBS Volume 7, SBS Volume 27, SBS Volume 48 and One Piece Red: Grand Characters

One Piece fans are fully aware of Panda Mana joke character created by Oda who makes constant cameos in the manga, anime, and even some of the video games. He has become the most famous easter egg in the entire franchise, but most people are completely unaware that there is quite a bit of lore related to Pandaman.

Pandaman was abandoned in a bamboo forest and raised by pandas. Eventually he grew into a wealthy man but later found himself in financial trouble with a dangerous debt collector known as the Tomato Gang. He even has a rival called the Unforgivable Mask who was tasked with tracking him down, and he's also made a few cameos in various One Piece products. There is a whole comical story alongside the series' main plot, and most fans are completely unaware of its existence.

8 Several satellites orbit the planet and aliens living on the moon

Revealing the mysteries of space

The model of the planet in the Tree of Knowledge and Enel fighting a space pirate.

  • Revealed in: Chapter 391 (Manga), Episode 275 (Anime) and Enel's Great Space Operations (Chapters 428 to 474)

One Piece is set in a fantastical world centered primarily on the exploration of the ocean and its many islands, so the series hasn't put much of its focus on space and aliens. However, this does not mean that all of this is completely irrelevant as Oda has revealed some startling information about the exterior of this fictional planet.

For starters, as can be seen in a model inside the Tree of Knowledge, the planet is surrounded not only by a single moon, but by five other moon-like natural satellites, although not much more information about them has been revealed so far. And if that wasn't enough, Enel's Cover Story has shown that creatures live on the moon, including a whole group of robots called Automata and a crew of dangerous space pirates. As fascinating as all of this is, it left fans with more questions than answers, with the biggest one being: Will Luffy and his crew visit the moon at some point in history?
