Unlocking Champion Cards in Monster Train 2
Monster Train 2 features five new clans that you need to unlock by completing certain tasks. You’ll unlock the first champion as soon as you unlock the clan. To get the second one, you’ll have to earn XP and reach Level 5.
This guide will only focus on the champions for the new clans in Monster Train 2, not the returning clans that need to be unlocked using Pyrehearts.
Fel
Fel, from the Banished clan, is the first champion you get to play with in Monster Train 2. Despite being the starter champion, he’s still one of the strongest in the game, with the ability to carry you through all covenant ranks. Fel’s playstyle revolves around stacking Valor to gain both damage and armor, allowing you to outlast and out-damage enemies. With Multistrike right out of the gate and abilities that grant Valor on Shift or increase your allies’ health and damage, you can’t go wrong with him.
As an allied clan champion, Fel gives you the Just Cause spell, which applies 2 Valor to a unit. The unit also advances to the front of the room, allowing you to trigger Shift abilities from your other units.
Fel’s upgrade paths are as follows
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Unchained |
Gains Valor permanently on Shift |
1×2 Attack, 10 Health |
Vanguardian |
Applies Valor to friendly units on Revenge |
2×2 Attack, 20 Health |
Savior |
Gains the Savior ability |
5×2 Attack, 20 Health |
Bolete the Guillotine
If you’re a fan of minion-based playstyle, then Bolete the Guillotine is the perfect champion for you. As the first unlockable champion in Underlegion, he uses Funguy spawners to trigger different effects and control the battlefield through sheer numbers.
With Bolete the Guillotine, it’s all about controlling the floors by constantly adding more units and buffing them up. His base stats are decent, and he synergizes well with just about any other clan champion as an ally. The constant reinforcement of units lets you soften up enemies before they reach the top floor, where your champion finishes them off.
When used as an allied clan champion, Bolete the Guillotine gives you the Eager Conscript spell card, which spawns a Funguy on a floor of your choosing. When combined with other cards from this clan, this spell becomes extremely powerful for board control.
Bolete the Guillotine’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Headsman |
Trample |
30 Attack, 20 Health |
Grants Propagate to friendly units on Slay |
||
Executioner |

15 Attack, 30 Health |
Hive Minder |
Gains Attack and Health permanently on Rally |
15 Attack, 25 Health |
Lady Gilda
Lady Gilda is the second unlockable champion in the Pyreborn clan, and follows a similar minion-based playstyle using Bloated Whelps. She is a versatile champion with a variety of mechanics you can explore depending on your starting upgrade path. She can be a DPS powerhouse with the Gildmother and Bloat Matron paths, or focus more on economy with her Lady Avarice upgrade path, allowing you to rack up tons of Gold to upgrade your deck. This flexibility makes her incredibly strong in different situations and covenant ranks.
As an allied clan champion, she grants you the Bloated Whelp unit card. The Whelp costs only 1 ember to deploy, and comes with the Indigestion ability that deals 1 damage to all enemies on the floor. It’s perfect for clearing weak enemies at the back of the room.
Lady Gilda’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Gildmother |
Trample |
35 Attack, 60 Health |
Summon a Gilded Egg on Summon |
||
Bloat Matron |

10 Attack, 45 Health |
Lady Avarice |
Enchants allied units with Avarice |
30 Attack, 30 Health |
Arduhn
Arduhn is the second champion you can unlock in Luna Coven, and he uses the power of Megablade to gain attack damage from Conduit stacks. He comes with decent stats and can hold his own at the front of a room, making him a reliable frontline fighter. Arduhn can play either as a damage dealer or support, depending on the upgrade path you choose. Arduhn is a versatile champion, and if you manage to stack Magic Power on his floor, he can accumulate enough damage to take out a boss all on his own.
As an allied clan champion, he grants the Moon Ritual spell, which applies 1 Conduit to friendly units. While it isn’t the most useful spell when you’re not using Magic Power, with champions like Lord Fenix or Orechi, it can synergize well.
Arduhn’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Mystic Hammer |
Gains the Shadowcast ability |
10 Attack, 30 Health |
Gains massive Attack boost during New Moon |
||
Battlleborne |
Permanently gain Conduit on Slay |
20 Attack, 12 Health |
Hierophant |
Apply Armor 2 to friendly units on Incant. Silent units gain double the amount. |
20 Attack, 20 Health |
Lord Fenix
Players will be able to unlock Lord Fenix pretty early in their Monster Train 2 journey. The champion has a straightforward design that uses Pyregel from spells and unit cards to boost the damage he deals to enemies. He also has a spell called Fenix Fire, which deals damage to a single enemy unit while applying Pyregel to all enemy units in the room.
Similar to Fel, once built correctly, Lord Fenix will be able to dish out incredible levels of damage in a single hit. However, it takes a while for him to start dealing significant damage. Since his base stats are pretty low, playing at higher covenant ranks with this champion becomes quite difficult without proper support.
As an allied clan champion, Lord Fenix gives you the Firestarter Spell. The spell deals 1 damage and applies 2 Pyregel to the target, making it perfect for stacking up Pyregel on the boss.
Lord Fenix’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Overlord |
Permanently Gains Attack on Slay |
20 Attack, 25 Health |
Golden Crown |
Gains Dragon’s Hoard on Conjure |
15 Attack, 30 Health |
Pyremaniac |
When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains additional stacks. |
20 Attack, 30 Health |
Ekka
Ekka from Luna Coven is perfect for players who like building their deck around spell cards. This champion wields the power of Mooncycle and Conduit to deal massive damage with each spell. Add that with all the high-damage spells available to the clan, and she can rush bosses long before the game reaches the relentless phase.
Ekka’s biggest weakness is her low health pool, meaning you always need to have a unit in front of her to tank damage. When you go all-in on magic power and use your spell cards to do most of the fighting, Ekka is one of the best champions in the game. However, as a standalone damage dealer, she falls short compared to other options.
When used as an allied clan champion, she gives you the Witchweave spell card. It costs 0 ember and can be used to snipe out enemy units at the back of the room or heal up your troops. It can also be buffed with Conduit, making it an excellent tool to have in your deck, regardless of your primary clan.
Ekka’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effects |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Celestial Spellweaver |
Conduit 6 |
15 Attack, 8 Health |
Gain Conduit on Incant |
||
Silver Empress |
Gains the Lunar Echo ability. |
12 Attack, 8 Health |
Gains bonus Conduit during Full Moon. |
||
Lunar Steward |
Grants bonus Attack and Health to friendly units on each Mooncycle. |
10 Attack, 10 Health |
Baron Grael
Baron Grael from the Lazarus League focuses on buffing equipped units and equipment cards. All of his upgrade paths come with decent offensive and defensive stats, and the buffs he provides are extremely powerful when utilized correctly. Lazarus League has numerous Assistant cards that, once killed, drop an equipment card you can use on the next turn. This mechanic complements Baron Grael’s overall design, allowing you to stack tons of damage across all of your units in all three rooms.
As an allied clan champion, Baron Grael gives you the Erratic Assistant unit card. It comes with the Scissor Hands graft, which gives the equipped unit additional attack damage. With unit-heavy decks, this is a great champion to have as an ally.
Baron Grael’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Living Armory |
Equipped friend units gain bonus Attack. |
8 Attack, 5 Health |
Learning Limb |
Attached equipment gains Attack permanently. |

It Hungers |
Gains the Devour ability. |

7 Deckbuilding Roguelikes You’ve Probably Never Heard Of
While the “deckbuilder roguelike” genre might seem niche, there are a ton of them. Here are some of the best ones not enough people know about.
Orechi
Orechi is one of the most versatile champions in terms of how you can set up a build in Monster Train 2. Orechi’s main gimmick is his Mix spell card, which lets you roll for spell cards that provide Lifesteal, Rage, Unstable, Reanimate, and other powerful effects. The only reason Orechi isn’t rated higher on this list is because of the RNG factor. However, once you figure out how to play the champion effectively, you’ll be setting up for the long game by stacking Infusion cards until the boss spawns.
As an allied clan champion, Orechi grants the Mix spell card, allowing you to apply all the buffs and debuffs that come with it to your main clan.
Orechi’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Brewmaster |
Gain the Small Concoction ability. |
20 Attack, 20 Health |
Reanimator |
Gains Reanimate and Unstable on Resolve. |
15 Attack, 6 Health |
Mad Scientist |
Apply Unstable to enemy units on Incant. |
15 Attack, 25 Health |
Madame Lionsmane
Madame Lionsmane is similar to Lord Fenix, with a playstyle revolving around building up debuff stacks. Instead of Pyregel, she uses a status effect called Decay that applies a damaging debuff to enemy units. Similar to Bolete the Guillotine, Madame Lionsmane can also work with summons. However, her base stats aren’t as high, and she plays more as a backline support than a damage-dealing tank.
As an allied clan champion, she gives you the Sporetouch spell, which lets you apply Decay to a target. It’s a decent card, and if you want to include other Underlegion cards in your deck along with some good debuffs, she can serve you well.
Madam Lionsmane’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Everbloom |
Spawn Funguy on Incant. |
5 Attack, 10 Health |
Maneater |
Gains the Maneating ability. |
25 Attack, 10 Health |
Sporesinger |
Apply Decay to enemy units on Action. |
8 Attack, 16 Health |
When a unit gains Decay, it gains bonus stacks. |
Talos
Talos plays more like a support unit than a traditional champion. She has the Flight ability, which lets her move to any targeted location across all floors, giving her incredible positioning flexibility. Her upgrade path abilities let her apply different buffs to allied units. While she doesn’t deal as much damage on her own, with the proper deck setup, you can stack significant damage and health on your units. With allied clans that have strong units, like Bolete the Guillotine from Underlegion, she can be an extremely effective support champion.
When used as an allied clan champion, she grants you the Inspire ability, which applies Valor to friendly units. Unlike Fel’s Just Cause, this one doesn’t push the unit to the front of the room, allowing you to keep your room setup exactly as you want it.
Talos’s upgrade paths are as follows:
Upgrade Path Name |
Base Effect |
Starting Stats |
---|---|---|
Battle Cleric |
Grants Valor to friendly units on Resolve. |
8 Attack, 20 Health |
Celestial Radiance |
Apply Melee Weakness to enemy units on Shift. |
10 Attack, 16 Health |
Enchantress |
Permanently grants Attack and Health to all friendly units on all floors on Celebrate. |
6 Attack, 12 Health |
