Subway 2039 is set to return the series to its original game formula as follows Exodus's experimental setup, with a distinct focus on its intense, deep narrative.
Revealed in April 2026, Subway 2039 returns fans to the grim, post-apocalyptic vision of Moscow, based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels. The franchise has been 4A Games' bread-and-butter shooter franchise since its launch Subway 2033 2010, and since then the series has been widely praised for its deep, intricate stories and impressive visual achievements. Recent contributions include the well-received Metro Exodus 2019, which took fans on a more open approach to the series, while the VR-based Metro Awakening found decent success as the franchise's first venture into virtual reality.

At the 2026 Xbox Summer Games Showcase, fans got a first look at what Subway 2039 has in store for them, with an official gameplay trailer clocking in at just over two and a half minutes. This time, fans will take on the role of The Stranger, a brand new character who replaces series protagonist Artyom, as he grapples with the new Spartan regime led by Fuher Hunter. The gameplay trailer gives fans a few hints about Hunter, along with a quick look at the gunplay and the game's incredibly impressive graphics, which now deliver a much grittier tone, as envisioned by Subway 2039 developers in response to the war in Ukraine. what more, Subway 2039 is now scheduled for release in February 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.

Subway 2039 was rumored for quite some time, and was even said to have a completely different version in production that was eventually scrapped to create the super-cruel version of the game that fans see today. In contrast to Metro Exodus, 2039 will bring fans back to a more linear approach to the series, focusing on tight gunplay, heavy atmosphere, and stealth-focused mechanics. Additionally, 4A Games has upped the ante this time, saying that the surface is as dangerous and deadly as ever after the events of Metro Exodus.
Damn reaction to Subway 2039s reveal trailer has been positive so far, with many fans blown away by the visuals and excited by the direction of the franchise, following Artyom's exit from the series.
