Several actors have played Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Tobey Maguire starred in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy — Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Andrew Garfield also played the web-slinging superhero in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Garfield gave Peter Parker emotional depth as it focused on the character's struggles. Tom Holland made the most appearances as Spider-Man in the MCU. Spider-Man star Tom Holland sparks speculation after sharing 'Secret Shoot Day' BTS
Tom Holland shared a behind-the-scenes photo of a “secret shoot,” leading some fans to speculate that it was for Spider-Man 4.
Film insider @MyTimeToShineH claims Garfield will have a “big role” in the Avengers: Secret Wars. “Sony wants him back for more projects,” they claimed. The statement sparked rumors that Garfield's third film, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, can only happen. Garfield was initially set to star in another film, but it was canceled due to several factors, including the underperformance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The result put financial pressure on Sony, who had ambitious plans for the film. They had announced several films and spin-offs, including The Amazing Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 4, The Sinister Six and Married.
If the report was true, it could happen because Garfield was open to reprising his superhero role. Garfield admitted Esquire that his return to the franchise in No way home was “really healing” as his participation was “left dangling” after his third solo film was scrapped. He also gave a positive answer when asked if he was open to returning to the MCU. “Sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it's additive to the culture, if there's a great concept or something that hasn't been done before that's unique and quirky and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into in,” he said. “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I give is joy, then I'm happy in return.”
Garfield is undoubtedly a talented actor and many still love to see him in his superhero costume, given the abrupt end of his era. In fact, many still campaign for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Garfield and Sony's relationship was rumored to be strained. In 2014, Garfield was scheduled to attend a key event in Rio de Janeiro to announce his next Spider-Man film but failed to make it due to an alleged illness. Sony executives were reportedly outraged and called for a move away from said iteration. In 2015, Sony and Marvel Studios reached an agreement to allow Spider-Man in the MCU, with the latter having creative control over the character's portrayal while the former retained the film rights. The deal resulted in the introduction of Holland as the new Spider-Man. Fans were delighted to see Holland, Maguire and Garfield enter Spider-Man 3 and the warm reception was a hint that the former Spider-Man actors were still welcome to the franchise.
So, yes, Garfield has a bright future in the MCU. And with the actor showing interest in the role given the right story and plot, there's no stopping us from seeing more of him in the upcoming Marvel movies, including Avengers: Secret Wars.
