Summary
-
Covering screens in classic games like Too Human and World of Warcraft was extremely long, which made the game frustrating.
-
Even acclaimed games as divinity: Original Sin 2 and Bloodborne suffer from long load times, which affects the overall player experience.
-
Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) had notoriously long and frequent loading screens, which prevented the gaming experience on top of its other flaws.
Games are available in many forms and sizes, so you can immerse yourself in endless worlds, everything from fantastic countries such as Mario's Slios to more realistic depictions such as Yakuza's Kamurochō, all with different games and goals, all of which become better and more detailed with each generation. Before we had SSD's blessing, however, it would take quite a while to charge these wonderful worlds.
While you can charge massive worlds with a moment today, not so long ago it would take up to several minutes, to go to new zones, die or even start the game for the first time that is boring in comparison. Some games handled it better than others, but others just wasted your time with how long they took to charge you back!
Too human
Too many hours wasted loading
Although he was a fairly mediocre third person RPG, Too Human had some bright moments overshadowed by its difficult controls, odd stimulation and its absurd long sequences and served as the loading screen every time you fell into battle.
See, every time you died in human, you would have to wait for a Valkyrie to revive Baldur, which would take about 30 seconds. Again, this was intended to help mask the long charging screen, but it didn't help at all. Every death made you even more annoyed when you were forced to watch this extended cutting scene!
DIVICE: Original Sin 2
We get it with this one
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the next, which is one that makes sense, as its world is huge with many moving parts. But it still doesn't make it feel better when you are stuck and stare at a load screen for several minutes when you first start the game, go into a new region or happen to die in the battle.
Thankfully, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is just so good that you simply take it up and accept that a big game will have longer than regular load times. We would rather be like this than to have burning fast load times and a messy game under the surface. Right?!
Old school problems
Ah, yes, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, one of the best, if not the best Elder Scrolls titles, giving us one of the most engrossing and captivating experiences on the original Xbox. This game was more than likely that the reason many people love Bethesda to this day, because nothing was right like it back during the day.
However, there was a massive disadvantage with a game of this size and extent on the original Xbox: Load Times. Just loading your saving from the main menu would take over a minute, then go into buildings, new areas and more would just add that time. It was absurdly long, but we picked it up because of how excellent it was!
Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)
Even its loading times are a problem
Okay, yes, we know, Sonic the Hedgehog (alias Sonic '06), is not necessarily a good game in any way, but that does not mean that we cannot highlight its terrible load times. Even with all its bugs, odd … intimate moments and design at a bad level, nothing is close to the frustration experienced when you load something in this game.
Sonic '06 may have loading times ranging from one second to just over a minute. Although it may not sound so bad at first, just know that they are happening all the time. Whatever you do, a charging screen will probably follow, which makes it more and more frustrating if you try to play the game and complete everything in it.
Do you want to do a sidequest? Here is a load screen for the mini game, then another to put you back in the world. Then another after turning in the page assignment. Did you die because the game went out? Here is one one minute load screen to kick you while you are down. How Sonic recovered from this is still surprising us!
World of Warcraft
A massive world with massive load times
How can we possibly make this list without including at least one MMO? Of course, we chose World of Warcraft, as it had the longest load times back during the day, as everyone loaded into their massive world filled to the brink of players on an old computer and hard drive. We are surprised that it is charged at all with some of these configurations.
However, World of Warcraft was worth all the trouble, as there was nothing similar in the early 2000s. While you can load into its dense, even more expansive and fantastic world in Blazingly Fast Pache today, that was not the case for all these years ago. There are some of us who lack nostalgia, but we are glad that the days are over!
Blood cage
Frustrating, even after death
Finally, we have blood -borne, without a doubt from Software's Magnum opus which apparently is locked forever on Playstation 4 without remaster or sequel in sight. Although it is a huge game in every department, which extends from its intense battle, impeccable art direction and Stjärnlore and stories, it has a dazzling question: it takes for Dang for a long time to charge.
Although there is a patch that helps to mitigate the load times, it is still unacceptably long. And in a game where you will die and respect a lot, you will look up some cumulative hours staring at that loading screen. We love this game, but these load times are without control!
