All Final Fantasy 14 players who are worth their salt will feel Jason Charles Miller, or at least be familiar with his voice, given that he has belted song over four iconic tracks for MMORPG, including the unforgettable close distance.
Miller also borrowed his vocal talents to Pro Wrestler Kenny Omega's latest theme song, which was also composed by the soction.
Miller was first asked to collaborate with the FF14 composer Masayoshi Soken on Shadowbringers, the theme song for the expansion of the same name. “I knew that the meaning directly. To be asked to sing the theme song to an extension of such a gigantic popular game is something that happens very rarely in someone's career. I wanted to make sure I did a fantastic job.”

Final Fantasy 14's cosmic exploration is the team that binds Playerbase needs
Cosmic exploration is exactly what I needed to get myself back to FFXIV.
Works with Masayoshi Soken
Miller worked at Shadowbringers for two days and worked so hard that he replaced his audio engineer because he wanted to work later than the first could handle, all that he could give the soo as much material as possible.
“I give a tag, a completed compiration of exactly what is written, and then I usually give two more to three options for completely composed take where I may do something a little different but still in the spirit of the song. I give some variations so so the sock can decide which one he may like, my second verse from take three, or my first verse from take four.
“By taking, I don't mean that I just sing it once. I sing it as many times as possible until I am satisfied, then I build for a while, and then I start again and do it again. I think it is important to do it if you work with someone remotely because you give them options so they don't have to do much and do it again.”
A “comped” tag is when musicians record the instruments individually and then add them to sound like they were recorded together.
After Shadowbringers, Miller continued to present his vocal talents at the edge, from Patch 5.5 death to Dawn, close to the distance, for the Endwalker expansion, and last released, for the new addition to Arcadion Raid in Patch 7.2.
“I love to loosen. I actually want to work up an acoustic version of it for me to just play on my own time,” says Miller. “But I know that closely at a distance has the most emotional impact for players, and so for me it is my favorite because I can see the effect that it has on people when I sing it live. It is really something that is special to me. I feel a heavy level of responsibility to make sure that when I sing one of these songs, they are what the fans expect.”
In addition to receiving the texts, Miller is usually provided with an information sheet with a page that explains what will happen to the song and some context. “When I heard close at a distance for the first time, I knew it would be special before I even read the notes.”
Video games have more significance
Miller, who plays for Final Fantasy fans in comparison to act as a frontman for his own band Godhead or as a solo artist, explains Miller that some elements are similar when he performs with the primals. He sings again with a rock band, which he has done all his life.
“Every single person in the audience knows every word of every song. In addition to the fact that we have visuals behind us where the song is shown in the game, I know that in their mind they see it, right? It is a bigger experience than just singing at a rock concert because if you sing your own song or a song that is only known, or even if it is a music video.
“When we sing songs from a game that is shown in a certain place, at a certain time in a game, which almost gives more connection to the audience member because then they remember what they did with their character the first time they heard it.”
He continues to express that MMORPG characters are extensions of ourselves, and when our characters experience events in Eorzea, we experience it for ourselves. “Your feelings don't know the difference, or how many people have made best friends playing MMO? How many have met their husband?
“To our brain and to some extent, our souls, definitely our emotions, what we experience in the game simulates in our body if we experience it in real life. I feel that the songs have even more significance when I sing them for players when we play at fanfest or eorzean symphony. There is a magical connection.”
Final Fantasy 14 has such an impressive catalog of hits, and Miller tells me that one of his favorites is flow. He is often touring with Amanda Achen, the singer for Flow, for the Final Fantasy event and laughs when he tells me: “I sing Flow a lot, and I sing it to Amanda sometimes too.”
Miller and Achen have become permanent friends by touring together, sharing advice on touring and keeping their song in shape, and at Momocon in Atlanta last year, the two sang shallow from a star was born together.
“We talk a lot about the importance of the game and what it means to the players, and she also plays now, because we want to experience what everyone else is experiencing. When we saw it from first and foremost, it's a kind of infectious thing.”
“I am the happiest person in the world”
Miller is a player himself and told me that he played World of Warcraft for several years and that he “probably had an unhealthy relationship” with it, which I am sure any MMO player can relate to. He has made a voice that acts for multiple video games, including World of Warcraft, which he says “gave me more of an excuse to continue playing it.” But he has also made a voice that acts for Final Fantasy 14 and takes on the role of Raubahn Aldynn for an area that is reborn, although later expansions have another actor. Miller loves that he was asked to return to FF14 to collaborate on the music and added that “even though I no longer voted that character, it was really cool to be a continuous part of the game.”
Miller has made a voice that acts too many video games and always tries to play the ones he is involved in. “I want to experience what the players experience, and I also want to know what I'm talking about if people ask me questions about it.” He tells me that it is fun to encounter his own voice when he plays games, even if he admits “sometimes it can take you out of the game”.
Miller reminds to play Final Fantasy 3 and “The Great moment when you get the airship and then can go everywhere, it's such a milestone”, and is currently playing through Final Fantasy 14. Right now he did in the second expansion, Stormblood, and tells me, “I have not come to the expansion where I started singing.
Dragoon is his choice of job, all because “Estinia looks so frigging cool. I was like,” I want to be. “
It's not just Fantasy RPGS Miller likes; He is also a big fan of EA Sports FC, although he is primarily in career mode, rather than giving in to the obsession with FUT. He loves EA Sports FC so much that he says he would love to make a song for meny music, before I joked, “I have to beat a kind of football in space games to Square Enix, then I can have all my loves in one place.”
In addition to Voice Acting for several games and creating songs with SOKEN for Final Fantasy 14, Miller has also written and contributed songs for other big name plays such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
“I'm the Luckiest Person in the World,” Miller Says, “I'm One of the Luckiest Singers in the World Busy I'Ve Sung On So many franchises. In Can't Believe It Sometimes, and Sometimes the Fans Can ' This, and you are the guy that sang on this? You know, they were years apart, but yeah, that's me again.
When it comes to contributing more to Final Fantasy 14, Miller says: “If I have my way, I will not come anywhere”, but admits that it is entirely up to Square Enix, then may not be released the last time we will hear his voice swing out in Eorzea.
