I need Assassin's Creed Hexe to be “Assassin's Creed Hexe” exactly

Assassin's Creed codename Hexeoften simplified to Assassin's Creed Hexwas first announced during a Ubisoft Forward event in September 2022, and all too often many members of the community (like myself) forget that it's just a codename. Simply put, it shouldn't be. About every rumor and leak about Assassin's Creed Hex is accurate, even if it's only a few of them, “Hexe” as a subtitle just captures everything it's trying to do perfectly.

I'm clearly not the only one who feels this way, as Redditor Snoo-55788 recently wrote and shared the same views on Assassin's Creed Hex. The title flows nicely. Witchwhich is a Germanic word meaning witch, adds emphasis to the specific setting and the Wurzburg witch trials, and is often used by the fandom I mentioned. Even its shorthand, AC Hexis simply pleasing to the eyes. “Coven” is another popular idea for its real name in the community, and while it's not bad, Witch is simply better. As a codename, however, there is some concern that it will change, but there is clearly scope for it to remain the same.

Assassin's Creed Hexe has a real chance to remain AC Hexe

Most codenames are internal names for game development projects, to prevent key information from slipping. For example, rumors suggest Assassin's Creed Hex the main character's real name is Anika, not the previously discussed Elsa, as Elsa was only an internal name. Witch has never been just an internal name to hide, especially since it was announced as Code name Hexe. And while most codenames change, fans in the community have also pointed out that some games haven't abandoned codenames.

Internal names vs. player-facing names are key considerations at any studio, and in response to Snoo-55788's original post on Reddit, user Brilliant_Ideal_5429 highlighted some of the internal names of the franchise:

  • Comet for Assassin's Creed Rogue

  • Victory for Assassin's Creed Syndicate

  • Empire for Assassin's Creed Origins

  • Kingdoms for Assassin's Creed Valhalla

  • Rift for Assassin's Creed Mirage

  • Red for Assassin's Creed Shadows

This does not mean that there is no possibility of it remaining the same. Interestingly, the Reddit user emphasized that Assassin's Creed Unitys codename was just Unity before it became the player's name; even more recently it was just Codename Jade before it was finalized as Assassin's Creed Jade. These two games, especially Jadegive hope to it Witch hangs on its name when it begins its official promotion and its proper disclosure.

Whether or not it does remains to be seen, but Ubisoft is no doubt aware that “Hexe” is already part of the community's lexicon. Changing it, even if it doesn't technically change it, can only hurt society. It would be a simple enough shift, and it's not like there would be any major complaints, but renaming something so common in that lexicon essentially means resetting conversations, resetting anchored content and discussions, and just, generally, resetting marketing. Even if it came out with the Würzburg witch trials right away, the sharing of information would undoubtedly have some impact. There would undoubtedly be people who are enthusiastic about AC Hex who doesn't know about an announcement and that it was the AC Coven (or whatever), and while most of these cases would be minor, that leaves as Witch doesn't hurt anything at all.
