The best sandbox games
The sandbox genre covers dozens of different games. Here's our list of the best titles you can enjoy on console and PC.
With your sketchbook handy, you'll be able to sketch out ideas for new furniture to build back on your home island as you sketch the various pieces of furniture you'll find in the ruins of Aloft. See something on an island you like? Draw it and then do it at home!
Sketch new furniture designs as you explore
It's not long into playing Aloft – it's during the Forgotten Legacy quest when you first learn about cleansing islands of their corruption – that you come across what looks like the ruins of someone's home. By default, you'll know how to make some standard items in your crafting menu to get you started when establishing a home planet – simple wooden floors and walls to get you started design and customize your home islands to feel more like, well, a home.
But if you've noticed all the ruins around you as you continue to explore, we hope you have found a sketchbook in the chests and baskets spread out, because you can then use it for draw furniture you see in the wild while exploring new islands. Although not everything can be replicated this way, through with your sketchbook and a piece of paperyou can find out how to make lots of different craft details to make your house feel cozier.
You can either craft paper pulp on a workbench by combining a grass herb, three small plants and a clean wateror you can too collect paper from the books you see lying around in some of these abandoned settlements.
While you walk around with your sketchbook equipped and have entered sketch mode to use it, Point the cursor at furniture or various building structures you find to see what you can draw inspiration from. Things you can sketch will appear highlighted in orange when you aim at them, while recipes you already know how to make are greyed out. The game will also tell you that you know the recipe instead of letting you waste paper drawing something you already have.
For furnitureshould you consider sketching things like:
- Lampswhich can be made of different materials and in different shapes or sizes. These occur in many structures.
- Tables and chairs which you can make into a variety of shapes after you also learn new shape recipes. These will often be in the ruins of homes or at vantage points.
- Carpets you notice under beds or tables in destroyed homes.
- Hanging decoration pieces like decorative rope patterns you see hanging from walls in abandoned settlements.
But don't forget to keep a sharp eye out additional building structures which you can then use to build yourself a real home on your home island, a more elaborate ship or whatever you want! Not only can you find new wooden structures like curved walls and circular platforms, but you'll notice a variety structural parts of stone when you stumble upon the ruins of temples or castles.
Be sure to mark different shapes of pieces, things like walls, floors, fences and door frameswhich can be placed in almost any shape you want. Most of the wood building materials also come in stone varieties, and you'll find plenty of forms of turf roofs to top it all off with a vibrant shade of green.
After sketching a new piece of furniture, it will be added to your build menu immediately, meaning you'll have access to that recipe from then on in this save!
