Disney Dreamlight Valley hosts a variety of animals, many of which can be fed, petted and even recruited to accompany you on your travels. Interacting with such animals can also earn you more Dreamlight, which can be used to unlock biomes, castle realms, and items in Scrooge's shop.

Here's everything you need to know about Disney Dreamlight Valley's official launch.
Once you've fed an animal, you'll begin the process of making it possible to choose it as a companion, along with Pua that comes from a quest, and several other companions from events. While companions don't provide any tangible benefits, they will follow you around and look adorable.

How to approach an animal
When you see an animal, it will answer in one of four ways and how it works depends on when you can feed it. Here's what to look for and how to respond.
Red/green light
Critters with this behavior will have a “danger” position and a “safe” position. You need approach them slowly when it is safe. The following animals like to play this game before letting you interact with them:
- Crocodiles. Crocodiles are safe to approach when their heads are down, but stop when they are up. Feed them when they are led down.
- raccoons. For raccoons, approach when they sit down, stay when they stand. Feed them when they relax.
- Cobras. Cobras are easy to spook, so wait until they lower their heads before approaching. They will go to bed when you can feed them.
Hunt
These animals like you chase them when you have seen them. Term after them until they stop again. When you've chased them enough, they'll let you approach and feed them. Make sure to bring the right snacks!
The following animals like to play tag with you:
- Foxes in frosty heights.
- Rabbits on the peaceful meadow.
- Monkeys in Ancient's Landing.
- Pegasus babies in Mythopia.
Wait
These critter types are coming spy on you before they let you feed them. They will either cower and cower or hover above you and watch for a few seconds before opening up to you. The following animals like to do this:
- Ravens will call your head. Let them finish flying.
- Sea turtles will stay in their shell. Sit close and wait for them to appear.
- Baby Dragons will cower and wait a few moments. Stand nearby and wait for them to open.
No games
Some animals don't have time for games and simply let you approach and feed them directly. These are the easiest creatures to befriend and make sure you have the opportunity to do so unlock new Disney Dreamlight Valley companions without having to play any games with them.
The following furry friends let you play with the hem right away:
- Squirrels will expect food immediately so be ready with something for them in your inventory!
- All five types of Sunbird will also come take food away from you in sight.
- In addition, Capybaras will walk right up to you for food.
- The Owls in the bandage will take food from you directly.
How to feed an animal
To feed an animal simply approach one slowly (after following the answers above) and interact with it by pressing A on Xbox or Switch, X on PlayStation or E/Left Click on PC.
Of interacting with an animal, you will have the option to feed it with one of the food items in your inventory. Each animal variant has its own favorite type of foodalthough you don't need to know it to recruit it to your companions.
Any animal can be
fed all available food,
but there is
advantages of choosing their favourites.
If you see one Purple friendship star when you hand over a food item, then you can be sure of it you have discovered their favorite food. By successfully submitting it, you will perform additional Dreamlight tasks, which in turn will net you more Dreamlight to spend around the valley.
Every animal's favorite food
All animal types have favorite food and popular food. These do not switch between color variantsexcept in the case of sunbirds. Here's what to look for:
How to recruit an animal as a companion
If you want recruit an animal to keep you company while you perform your Dreamlight duties, then you must feed it two to three times.
As you can only feed each type of animal once a day, you will need return visit your chosen friend a second time after a period of 24 hours in real life has passed.
If you try to feed
same type of animal
a second time on the same day,
the food will simply disappear.
You must feed each animal again to increase your friendship until you can add it as a companion. Critters have too a chance to drop items if they get their favorite food.
How to check if a Critter is now a companion
To see if an animal has become a companion yet go to Main Menu > Collection > Critters. All the animals in the game are shown here and when you recruit them they will be highlighted on this menu.

click on any companion
in this menu to find out
what biome
it's in, like
if it's around
the current day. Remember that
your game is always synchronized with your device's clock.
Some variants will not appear in the collection, but they will appear in the included section of your inventory. This is usually for
special companions that are limited time rewards
.
How to equip and change companions
To access accompanying menu go to Inventory > Wardrobe > Companion. Here you can see any companions you have from missions or events, on the side all recruited animals.
All you need to do to equip them is select them by clicking on the image. Now you can exit the menu and your new companion will follows you around.
To change, go back to the same menu and select another option or click the add-on again to deselect it.
Your companion will stay with you throughout Dreamlight Valley, until they are dismissed. If you enter the main castle, your companion will disappear until you return to the valley.
Friends are
cannot be summoned in other realms.
How to place companions in your village
You can create the cozy community home to place more of your Disney Dreamlight Valley companions around your village. This allows you to choose up to four animals per home, allowing them to roam freely around the village near their new home.
You can place as many cozy social homes as you want!
This allows you to not only see them, but also pet them. You can place toys in the village for them to play with too, creating a homey atmosphere. To get to bond with your animal companion in Dreamlight Valley makes the game much more cozy and engaging. You can even take photos together!
