Equipment overview
While the main emphasis in a game like Echoes of Aincrad is on your weapon, given that there's more room for variation with it, you still need to pay close attention to your gear as you level up, as that's how you'll cover your Defense statistics without changing any of your attributes to do so.
Armor in Echoes of Aincrad is divided into four categories:Tops, gloves, pants and shields. To craft new armor, you can either view what you collect as part of your main quests or head over to Forge to craft new armor as you unlock the recipes.

Dodge and Parry are Shield skills you'll want to master if you try to use one in Echoes of Aincrad, as you won't be able to parry weapons with your bare hands! If you're using a heavier weapon, be sure to roll instead of duck, which requires much more movement and time to complete.
Only certain weapons allow the use of shields
When you first start playing Echoes of Aincrad, you get a sword and shield to get you through the first dungeon with Iori, but that doesn't mean you have to stick with it for the whole game. Even if you decide to change which weapon becomes your primary type, there is three weapon types which allows the use of a shield also in combat.
The weapon types you can use with Shields in Echoes of Aincraft are:
- One-handed swordespecially once you've started unlocking some of the better swords past your default weapon! Anyone playing a skilled character should choose this combination.
- Rapiers is a great way to rely on chain attacks and combos while defending yourself with a shield, perfect for characters with high Agility stats.
- Mace's rounding out the group as power weapons that you can use a shield with, doing the heaviest damage of any one-handed weapon in the game when used by strong characters.
Anytime you have one of these equipped, you will be able to equip a shield by the chest to use in battle alongside your melee weapon. Having a shield equipped for combat means you can easily parry incoming attacks to open a quick but meaningful window for yourself to deal extra damage to the enemies instead of taking it yourself.
Visit your chest to make sure you have a shield with these weapons, for extra protection against enemies and for an extra way to deal damage yourself. Having a two-handed weapon or a dagger as your equipped weapon will prevent you from equipping a shield when changing armor.
