You can get the Volt Hatchet Sidearm right outside the front door of the orphanage by breaking the lantern on the right. We highly recommend using this Sidearm over the others, as its AoE makes it easier to hit Thorne, and it deals a hefty amount of damage!
How to defeat Thorne
Although he is a kind of supervisor, Thorne still has access to a decent amount of attacks, forcing you to be alert and in place if you want avoid them and punish properly him when the opportunity arises. While he hits hard, all of his actions are easily telegraphed, allowing you to consistently get out of the way while reaching a more advantageous position for your own offense!
Thorne: Advanced slashes
When the meeting begins, Thorne will likely take center stage of the arena for a short period, so you can hit him with a well-placed Volt Hatchet throw before launching his first attack. His first attack will almost always be his advanced slashes, which allows him to perform a series of cruel strikes with his trident, each slash propels him forward slightly, making them a little challenging to dodge.
The moment you see Thorne start swinging his trident before him, Dig underground and create distance between you and him. When it's far enough away, you can throw another Volt Hatchet on him that is Dig away from him again if he gets too close. You can often hit him with two to three Volt Hatchets here and then land several normal attacks on him once he's done his attack!
Thorne: Jumping
This is where Thorne often comes from begin performing a series of short jumps at you, without actually attacking with his weapon. If he touches you, you will take damage, but with enough space between the two of you, that's unlikely to happen. When he jumps towards you, Burrow underground and create distance, then keep moving away from him until he's done. He will usually perform three to four jumps.
After finishing his hop, Thorne will be in place for a short period, allows you to throw more Volt Hatchets on him, while lands several normal attacks, causing quite a bit of damage to him!
Thorne: Super jump
Once he's jumped around, he'll unleash the real deal and perform one super jump, takes him high above the arena. The moment you see him fly, use your Dig down and go the complete opposite direction. Thorne will follow, and you will see his shadow start chasing after you. Just keep going in the opposite direction, Digs to get more speed, to get far away from him when he lands.
On landing, Thorne will create one small AoE around itself, but will also be stuck in place temporarily, so you can follow up with even more Volt Hatchets. When the AoE wears off, so can you run up to him and land several normal attacks, significantly degrades his health!
Thorne: Twisters
After that, Thorne usually comes quickly start spinning his trident before starting one swell of Twisters towards you at a rapid pace. While they come in hot you can Dig for them to pass over you, so you can avoid injury altogether. Remember, though, that you can't stay underground forever, so make sure you're not in the way of another Twister when you emerge.
You watch about five to six Twisters here, so try to create distance when you see Thorne start twirling his trident, then use your Burrow to avoid damage if any of them get near you. From there you can throw more Volt Hatchets at him, then prepare for his next attack!
You'll likely be low on Joules here, so start destroying some of the torches and mowing down some of the patches of grass to hopefully replenish your Joules so you can keep using your sidearm!
Thorne: Big Mines
Next, Thorne will likely go right into his Radiant Mines attack, have him stretch his trident forward before quickly lunges forward and drops explosive mines behind him in a straight line. Once he has performed a dash, he will perform another immediately after in another direction, creating a nice angle of bombs. Then, once he's deployed his mines, he'll start unleashing a series of Progressive strikes.
This attack is the hardest to avoid by Thornes so far, and we strongly recommend that you create as much distance as possible the moment he rushes forward. Because you will be on opposite side of the arena, you can hit him with yours Volt Ax as he begins to unleash his advancing strikes, while in the open of his mines. Use your Dig to continue creating much needed distance, while peppering him with your side arm!
Phase Two – Thorne: Super Jump
When you get Thorne's health down to half-way, you get into second phase of the encounter, causing some of his previous attacks to be slightly modified, making them harder to deal with. First up, we have his Super jump. As before, he will crouch before jumping high across the arena, allowing you to track his location via his shadow, giving you plenty of time to Dig and create distance.
But this time, when Thorne crashes into the ground, he's about to let loose six Twisters, send them all over the arena. If you dug far away from his landing point, you probably could find a gap in the Twister and cut through it, so you can throw Volt Hatchets at him, while weaving in many standard attacks for massive damage. If not, simply burrow under the Twisters and then land a few attacks on him before going back on defense!
Phase Two – Thorne: Dashing Mines
Thorne's next modified attack is his large mines, causing him to perform pretty much the same attack, except this time he creates a whole rectangle of mines. Yes, that's right, he will dash four times in total, leaving bombs behind each time, leaving very little room for you to move. Fortunately, because first set of bombs will go off before he is done, you can walk towards that side of the arena to avoid taking damage from the other mines.
But remember, Thorne will still do his thing Progressive strikes after his fourth dash, so be prepared to dodge those attacks as well. If you still have Volt Hatchets, you can throw them at him when he charges at you. If not, wait for him to do so finish off his attacks before he runs up to him and lands multiple hits on him!
Phase Two – Thorne: Twisters
Last up we have his Twisters attack, which is slightly modified compared to the others, to have him send out many more Twisters than before ia more sporadic pattern. As before, when he starts spinning his trident, creating distance, then try to escape from Twister while Burrows under all who come near, while paying attention to others.
You will do it likely gone from Joules at this point, so you must run up to him and land standard attacks, which becomes easy as he has been stuck in place for quite some time during this attack. This is where you come from repeat all of the above until Thorne is taken down, to let him escape from Ossex Orphanage, which means you'll probably meet him again in the not too distant future!
