Secret level will launch on Amazon Prime Video on December 10, and will serve as a 15-episode gaming anthology covering many iconic titles such as Harmony, Cross-fire, Exodusand many more. All possible avenues are covered, with historic franchises such as Pac-Man and Mega man leading the charge, including even a small detour through the realm of Dungeons & Dragons and ensure that no part of the gaming subculture is left unexplored.
As a natural part of that adventure, the impact of indie games would have its own role to play, and Secret level comes with not one, but two sections dedicated to independent games. The titles that now have a unique place in the anthology are none other than 2D roguelike platformers Spelunky and beat-em-up for martial arts Sifu by Sloclap. SifuThe episode in particular serves as a great example of how much care has been put into each customization contained within Secret level.
Why both new and returning fans of Sifu will be pleased with Secret Level's adaptation
There are hardly any gamers out there who are not aware of the fact that video game adaptations are not easy. Thanks to newer adaptations such as Secret level itself, but there are many more success stories that catch the eye of general and die-hard viewers. Sifu is likely to be seen as one of the adaptations that successfully bridges the gap. The Secret level adaptation seems to have taken notice of Sifus praise from critics, as its combat was widely praised and regarded as one of the best beat-em-up titles of all time led to Secret level making sure it was filled with blood-pumping action from start to finish with a story full of heart to back it up.
The “It Takes a Life” episode serves as a great advertisement for the game itself, giving viewers a glimpse into the story contained within without taking away from the experience if they decide to try it out for themselves later. As for the animation, Sifus adaptation is presented in an incredibly dynamic style that is very similar to Netflix's own Secretwhich is great to see for an indie game in particular.
Each Secret level the episode seems to take the line between casual viewers and die-hard fans very seriously, and Sifus adaptation is no different as it presents the thesis behind the game in a compelling way. Spelunkys episode gets similar treatment, though the moral of the episode is a celebration of what makes roguelikes so special more than the game itself. Sifus message is uniquely its own, which is what makes “It Takes a Life” so special.
Due to its nature as an anthology, it makes sense that not all Secret level section would tackle each game in the same way. Different titles get different aspects highlighted, though Secret levelpp Sifu manages to capture everything that makes the game great in an entertaining watch. It's just another part of Secret level that manages to learn from past mistakes in adapting video games to celebrate what everyone loves about games in a whole new way. Where most studios and animation teams would have easily focused on more AAA titles, Secret level makes it very clear that gaming wouldn't be the same without indie games, and they deserve to be respected on the same level.
