Star Trek Magic: The Gathering the set may still be a while away from launch, but we got an exciting weekly MTG livestream that revealed details about the set, including the first-ever signed cards and four new Commander precons.
These Universes Beyond precons all look pretty exciting and are well-themed based on key characters and groups from the show, so let me take you through everything we know about these four new precons, including color identity and price.
What are the Four Star Trek Commander Decks?
The four Star Trek Commander decks carry the following names and color identities:
- Federation Fleet – Jeskai (Blue, White, Red)
- Landing Party – Ribbon (Green, White, Blue)
- Klingon Fury – Mardu (Red, White, Black)
- We Are The Borg – Esper (White, Blue, Black)
We can make a pretty easy guess based on the box art which character will be the lead commander for each deck, but it's notable that each box only has one character, when often those shown also represent the backup commander for each precon.
Federation fleet
This deck will be led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and will rely heavily on card draw and vehicle cards. Star Trek is expected to lean heavily on the Station mechanic introduced in Edge of Eternities, so you'll be launching space stations to transform them into powerful creatures.
To do this you need to have creatures in play, be they permanents or tokens, so even if card draw and stations are the primary mechanics, you still need to make sure you have ways to get creatures into play and protect them long enough to recharge your space stations.
Landing party
This deck is led by Spock and will rely on returning mechanic Landfall as well as “Strange New Worlds”. This second mechanic isn't completely clear based on what's been revealed from the set so far, but it could refer to artifacts or spell cards that bear the names of planets from throughout Star Trek history. The much more unlikely possibility is the return of battle cards, but that would fit the theme if handled correctly.
Klingon Fury
We learned very bit about Klingons during the MTG Weekly stream, with the only real reference being the fact that we have a Klingon Commander precon led by Worf.
Mechanically, this deck looks like it will be the total aggressor at the table, much like the Avengers Assemble deck from Marvel Super Heroes. I expect a creature heavy deck list and spells built around damaging or buffing creature power.
We are Borgen
Finally, we have the Borg deck led by the Borg Queen. Based on the Borg cards we've seen so far, it's fair to assume that assimilation will play a big role in this deck. This mechanic seems to interact with other players' graveyards and bring creatures back onto the battlefield under your control, just as a Borg rather than their previous types.
How Much Will Star Trek Commander Precons Cost?
Given that Star Trek is a Universes Beyond set, the base prices for each product are slightly higher. This is reportedly to cover the additional cost of licensing each UB set. This means it The Star Trek Commander precon decks will cost $74.99 each for the base versions and $159.99 for the collector versionswhich features each card with a surge foil finish.
