God of War Laufey's Everywhen changes everything about the franchise

God of War Laufey makes many exciting new changes to the franchise. The most obvious one is that Kratos will not be this chapter's main character. Instead, his late wife, Faye, will take the lead as she enters a mysterious new world. While she is dead in the land of the living, she has a new life in Everywhen. The first game revealed for God of War Laufey offered a sneak peek at this strange new place, and it looks fascinating.

The Everywhen has raised more questions than answers, but there are at least a few things confirmed about the compelling new location. That was clear in the announcement God of War Laufey's Everywhen is an afterlife for the gods. However, it is much more than that. The Everywhen is the very birthplace of magic. Between the magical properties of the realm and its reputation for hosting dead gods, Everywhen has some intriguing implications when it comes to the overall God of war lore.

God of War Laufey, Explained: Who is Faye?

God of War Laufey will follow Kratos' second wife, Faye, and her journey in Everywhen. Here's what you need to know about her character.

God of War Laufey's Everywhen is a fascinating new addition to the God of War universe

Okay, so Everywhen is the beginning and end of all magic and the place where gods go after dying in humanity. That much is clear. However, what is not so obvious at the moment is how a magical realm where every single god is present works. It has already been teased that there will be some really cool gods in it God of War Laufey. The Mongolian god Begtse and the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet feel like a formidable duo, but it's still not entirely clear whether the two rule Everywhen or just control part of the realm.

Who is the most powerful God in Everywhen?

Everywhen is not exclusive to just one pantheon. Every single mythology goes to the realm when they die. Not every pantheon has a main deity, but many have a central deity who rules over the others. It raises the big question of who is the supreme god when all the other gods are gathered in one kingdom. This will create a huge power vacuum. No one wants to be at the bottom of the god hierarchy, so Everywhen can be filled with constant god-versus-god struggles for power. After seeing their initial reveal, it's not hard to imagine a scenario where Begtse and Sekhmet try to team up to gain control of Everywhen.

This is pure speculation, but it's very possible that Faye is walking straight into a war zone far more harrowing than just her run-ins with Begste and Sekhmet. A god's main purpose is to rule over others, and taking that into a setting where everything living within the realm is either a god or magical is a fascinating way for the story to go down. God of War Laufeys main villain is likely still being kept under wraps, so seeing what other gods are potentially up for grabs on Faye is one of the most intriguing aspects to consider.

It is not clear whether gods know about everything before they die

God of War Laufeys announcement also teased that Mask of Creation is connected to Everywhen in some way. For those in need of a refresher, the Creation Mask is an ancient artifact that can see into the god-filled realm. IN RagnarökOdin stumbled upon a rift that looked into what many have now theorized is the Everywhen. He tried to look into the crack, and this is how he claims he lost his eye. Next to the opening in reality was the crushed mask. Odin's obsession with the Mask of Creation flourished from that moment, but Atreus broke the finished version of the ancient object before the Allfather could use it to glimpse the Everywhen.

In the book God of War: Lore and LegendsOdin's claims of losing his eyes are contradicted by an excerpt that claims he actually lost his eye after Mimir spiked his water with hallucinogenic mushrooms. Despite that difference, Odin's fascination with the rift remains a central part of Ragnaröks story.

This makes me wonder if every god is unaware of Everywhen or just Odin and the rest of God of wars Nordic gods. It would be interesting if some pantheons were aware of Everywhen and others were not. This would lean even further into the potential power vacuum that a competitive god-filled world would create. Gods who have prior knowledge of the magical world would have a great advantage over the gods who did not know about it before death.

God of War Laufey's mixed mythology has the potential to make God Encounters the best in the series

Magic is much more powerful in Everywhen, and it is incredibly difficult for gods to be killed in this realm. There is the possibility of death even impossible for the strongest. That combination of strength and magic is a really promising sign for God of War Laufeys boss fight. Greek gods returning feel like a given, and there's also the chance for fallen Norse gods to come back into the limelight. The Everywhen feels destined to shake up previously held notions about God of wars lore as fans will likely see that these gods probably didn't even have access to the full extent of their abilities.

There's no telling what gods are capable of in Everywhen. This new realm may even mean gods that were in the past God of war games have brand new powers that make them even stronger. It's both a terrifying and exciting thought. Faye and the mysterious sword she encounters in the game preview are already a dangerous duo, and other gods will be just as powerful.

There have been theories about the sword Faye wields God of War Laufey is Excalibur. Previous leaks have claimed that Merlin will be a talking sword in the game, which could be a fun twist on the Excalibur myth. However, leaks should be met with skepticism.

As exciting as this new chapter is, it won't be clear how else the game will turn on the series' lore until Santa Monica Studio decides to reveal more. There hasn't even been one God of War Laufey release date revealed yet. It will hopefully be announced when this year's Game Awards come around in December. Until then, it's a fascinating rabbit hole to go down in thinking about what Everywhen might mean for the gods and their place in the magical world.
