Something that helped Yu Yu Hakusho different from some of the best Shonen of its time was the distinct lack of transformations. Other series would often have their heroes or villains manifest physical changes to represent their growth in power, depicting these changes as a literal evolution ala Dragon Ball. Yoshiro Togashi, the creator of the series, did not tend to use this trope, preferring to focus on strategic battles.
That said, this does not mean that transformations do not exist within Yu Yu Hakusho universe, as the few times they were used proved to be extremely powerful. These forms would either allow the characters to greatly enhance their fighting abilities or, in more extreme cases, grant them access to overpowered abilities that could completely alter reality.

Koenma's adult form is interesting but not powerful
Koenma, known and respected as the ruler of the spirit world, looks like a small, well-dressed infant who can always be seen holding a pacifier in his mouth. As he himself has admitted, he is a physically weak fighter, whose main threat comes not from power but from the overwhelming magical energy he has stored in his favorite accessory for centuries.
During important battles, the Spirit King could abandon his infant form and age his body to look like a young human male. This form, while visually impressive, did not alter his abilities in the slightest, as his power remained contained solely within his pacifier. As such, this is objectively the weakest transformation in the series, with no overall effect on the user.

Rando's disguise proved useful in deceiving hunters
First introduced as the innocent monk Shorin, Rando acts as one of the antagonists in the Spirit Detective Saga, an arc that helps cement Yu Yu Hakusho as one of the best Shonen ever. This cunning demon would hide as a human boy to lure them into a trap, make them small with a special curse, and then steal their abilities.
His true appearance, as a tall, red-haired, muscular demon, would only be revealed to those who could overcome his tricks or during serious battles. While his ability to disguise himself as a human was quite effective at lowering a target's defenses, it did not help at all during real battles, as it gave Rando no real advantage or power boost in battle.

Kuro Momotaro was able to harness the power of nature to his advantage
The Dark Tournament Saga is considered by many fans to be not only one of the best tournament arcs of all time, but the high point of the series. It introduced a plethora of exciting and powerful fighters, such as Kuro Momotaro, a man whose main technique revolved around using small pieces of dough imbued with demonic power to change his appearance and abilities.
He could choose from three different animals, each of which could help him with a specific obstacle. His Ape Armor would give him exceptional strength and durability. The Phoenix Armor allowed him to fly for short periods of time. Finally, Wolf Armor dramatically increased his speed and agility, while gaining sharp claws to attack opponents. Even with these abilities, the man was quickly defeated by Hiei, who proved far superior.

Elder Toguro's body could transform into anything
Elder Toguro is sadistic and cruel to a fault, a man whose love of suffering was surpassed only by his desire to see opponents broken before him. This monstrous individual would often be seen riding on his younger brother's shoulders and subtly manipulating him to carry out the eldest sibling's will. Despite his cowardly and cunning nature, the villain knew how to fight, using his strange abilities.
After the opening of the Dark Tournament fifty years before the series began, the man became a demon with the ability to completely transform and modify his body and appearance. He would use these abilities to transform parts of himself into weapons, escape from dangerous opponents, and on several occasions regenerate himself from mortal wounds. Although not the most threatening skill of fighters who could destroy mountains with one finger, Elder Toguro's transformations proved to be quite a nuisance.

Genkai can temporarily return to his prime
One of the most iconic and beloved mentors in anime, Genkai is an old, pink-haired woman whose dominance over Spirit Energy was second to none. Legendary among the world's strongest warriors for being the creator of the Spirit Wave style and the teacher of Yusuke, this imposing and venerable elder could achieve almost anything, including returning to his youth for a short period.
By channeling her energy into every cell in her body, Genkai's body would transform back to its prime, completely changing her appearance and greatly increasing her overall abilities. During this time, Yusuke's mentor was able to completely dominate even the most elite human opponents, with only a handful of exceptions. Unfortunately, as the power gap in the series continued to widen, Genkai's transformation became a thing of the past, unable to defy powerful demons.

Hiei Jaganshi's form was powerful but had a major flaw
While searching for his mother's missing treasure, Hiei encounters the demon surgeon Shigure, who decided to help the boy by implanting the legendary Jagan Eye into him. This ancient treasure was feared worldwide for its terrifying abilities, such as telepathy, mind control, and temporary paralysis. It also gave the user access to the terrifying Jaganshi form.
While this technique was active, Hiei's body turned a deep shade of green, with multiple eyes emerging over his torso and arms. This painful transformation sequence would instantly increase the strength, agility, durability, and spiritual power of the user, at the cost of making the eyes over the entire body extremely vulnerable to damage.

Younger Toguro's body can become a living weapon
Once a noble and disciplined martial artist who lost all his students to a demon's rampage, Younger Toguro became a hateful and self-loathing individual whose only desire was to find someone strong enough to take him down. This drastic personality change led him to abandon not only his strict moral code, but his humanity as well, becoming a timeless and powerful demon himself.
One of the abilities he gained through this wish was the ability to transform his body whenever he would flex his already impressive muscles. The more he would apply pressure, the more his body would transform, with his final stages turning him into a hideous gray demon with stone-like skin. Still, holding this form for too long would quickly drain his energy, forcing him to either absorb someone else's life force or risk dying.

Sensui's armor was born from a rare type of energy
Known to be one of the most ruthless villains of all time, Sensui is a man who became convinced that humanity was a plague after witnessing the infamous Chapter Black tape. This video, which featured the worst crimes and atrocities committed by humans, prompted Sensui to prepare a devious plan that revolved around the idea of bringing the demon world to Earth, so that the monsters could feast.
To achieve this goal, he utilized a special type of power known as Holy Energy, which could transform his body into two different kinds of armor. He could use the first to tenfold his defensive abilities and become nearly invulnerable against weaker opponents. His second transformation would boost his offensive abilities and turn the man into an unstoppable force that could kill almost anyone with a single hit.

Kurama's demon form made him a major threat to demons
Reborn in the body of a human baby after being nearly killed by demon hunters, Kurama was one of the most powerful beings in the entire demon world. Most of his power was lost during the soul transfer, as no human body was meant to carry that much strength. Nevertheless, through painstaking training and effort, the silver fox demon managed to regain his power and become able to transform between his human and demonic selves.
While using his original body, Kurama becomes an S-level threat, able to wipe out regular fighters without even breaking a sweat. His control over Spirit Energy and innate physicality can make him one of the most dangerous opponents anyone can face in battle. Although he cannot maintain this form indefinitely, Yusuke's friend proved time and time again how effective the technique can be by defeating some of the strongest opponents.

Yusuke Mazoku Form is objectively the most powerful of all
Mazoku are a type of rare and overwhelmingly powerful race of demons known to have a strength that can devastate entire armies. During his fight against Sensui, Yusuke discovered that he was a direct descendant of one of the Three Kings of the Demon World, the only known member of this special race until then. It is thanks to this discovery that the protagonist awakens his latent power and becomes a monstrous fighter.
Harnessing his Mazoku heritage, Yusuke transforms into a long-haired demon with intricate tattoos covering his entire body. Besides making him look extremely terrifying, this form would increase his power, durability, agility, and Spirit Energy mastery by several degrees. Yusuke was nowhere near invincible when using this technique, but he was by far one of the strongest Yu Yu Hakusho sign.
