Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: Director's DLC Comments Explained

We still have a long and arduous wait ahead of us Final Fantasy 7 Revelationthe third and last part i Final Fantasy 7 remake saga. This remake project started in earnest with the apt name Final Fantasy 7 Remakewhich launched in 2020, and continued with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirtha much grander and more ambitious endeavour.

While Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a fairly linear adventure, Rebirth launched the series deep into open-world territory, complete with “Ubisoft towers,” various biomes, and more minigames than you can shake a stick at. Interesting, Rebirth never received any post-launch DLC – an apparent step back from Remakewhich received a substantial expansion in the form of Intergradewhich introduced Yuffie. However, Square Enix had a pretty good explanation for this, saying that the dev team chose to skip the DLC because Rebirth because fans “want to see the third part of the series as soon as possible.” It's hard to argue with Square on that front. Plus, the base game too FF7 Rebirth provides more content than the base game Remake and Intergrade combined, so it's not a big loss. That said, the same logic may not exactly apply Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation introduces the FITS system, which is the game's own version of the Final Fantasy series' iconic Job system, giving party members access to new outfits and abilities.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation makes a huge change to the battle system

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation confirms that a major change to the game's combat system is one that longtime Final Fantasy fans can enjoy.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says a DLC is possible

In a recent conversation about Final Fantasy 7 Revelation with GameRant, director Naoki Hamaguchi said this when asked about the future of FF7 remake universe:

“I can say that, much like we did with FF7 Remake IntergradeI would be interested in offering a DLC chapter with additional story content after or within FF7 Revelationif there is strong support from the fans. That's something we might consider.”

When asked if he would be willing to develop this theoretical expansion, Hamaguchi declined, saying that it would spoil the story content of Revelation bass playing. But just the fact that he would make such a claim so soon after FF7 Revelation disclosure is meaningful in and of itself. Of course, there is no confirmation that such DLC is coming, but many AAA developers would probably avoid mentioning DLC for a game unless it was, to some extent, already planned. Remember, Hamaguchi didn't answer a question about DLC specifically. He presented the subject himself.

And in a way, this makes a lot of sense. The rationale for skipping DLC with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was a desire to plow on with the development of Final Fantasy 7 Revelationbut there is not supposed to be a new game after Revelation. In other words, there is no other destination for the remake saga after-Revelationother than an expansion.

But if Final Fantasy 7 Revelation finishes FF7 story, then what can a DLC cover? It may follow an original story i FF7 world, but Hamaguchi specifically said that the discussion of DLC would reveal what Square Enix left out of the base game, implying that a potential expansion would be based on an existing story or concept. Assuming that's the case, there are some obvious choices for customization.

Minor spoilers ahead too Final Fantasy 7 and its spin-off content.

A Final Fantasy 7 Revelation DLC could customize the Advent Children

Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children is a 2005 CGI-animated film set two years after the events of Final Fantasy 7. In it, Cloud and his allies discover a plot to revive Sephiroth with Jenova's remains and aim to thwart it. The film also introduces Geostigma, a mysterious disease that affects several characters, including Cloud. There isn't much substance to the plot of the film itself; Advent children was more or less a way to get everything FF7 characters gather again for one last hurray, for better or for worse.

Really, Advent children is not exactly universally loved. Those familiar with FF7 often criticizes it for downplaying certain aspects of the base game, which are either retconned (eg Rufus Shinra's death) or feel hamstrung (eg Cloud fighting Sephiroth's spirit for the umpteenth time). For those who don't know FF7, Advent children makes little sense in the first place.

But adapt Advent children in video game form might actually work. The “one last job” premise can often work better in a video game, especially a DLC for a game series that players have sunk hundreds of hours into at this point: Cloud and his friends are in their final form in Advent childrenand this would be cool to experience in the game. Plus an expansion after Advent children could present a good opportunity to remedy some of the film's less effective creative choices.

Option B: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation can remake Dirge of Cerberus

Another possible option for a Final Fantasy 7 Revelation expansion, and maybe even a better one depending on your perspective, would be to modernize the 2006s Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7. This PS2 spin-off revolves around Vincent Valentine and takes place after the events of Advent children. Its plot revolves around Deepground, a black ops outfit formed by Shinra, and Hojo, whose spirit has possessed the leader of Deepground. Tonally, it's much darker and edgier than Final Fantasy 7matching Valentine's gloomy attitude.

Shoot enemies on the streets in Dirge of Cerberus Final Fantasy 7

We will get to play as Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy 7 Revelationsand with him playing a more significant role in the story this time around, he could win over a new set of fans. If this were to happen, then a DLC based on Dirge of Cerberus would be a no-brainer. Of course, the original game is not as groundbreaking or popular as the original Final Fantasy 7so it would arguably make more sense to adapt it as an expansion than a full scale remake on the scale of e.g. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
