Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy Tactics are widely considered to be two of the best games in the entire franchise, and for good reason. Both have incredible stories with iconic villains, engaging battles, memorable moments and great writing, yet only one of them has received a remake so far.
Final Fantasy 6 has come up many times in discussions of which Final Fantasy games should be remade, and while nothing has materialized yet, you just know that modders are around the corner doing what the community wants most. While not as visually impressive a remake as Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, one modder has put his own spin on the definition of “remake.”
Final Fantasy 6 has been remade as a strategy game
First discovered by GamesRadar, a modder named Conman first began working on a remake of Final Fantasy 6 in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics over three years ago, and has been constantly working on the project ever since. You can see that a number of videos have been uploaded to the modder's YouTube channel, showing that it is building off of the original FF Tactics rather than the remake.
However, if you expect the mod to follow the plot of the story to the letter, you may be a little disappointed. To try and ease the stress of completely remaking a game with all of its systems, Conman has instead chosen to just redo the battles in Final Fantasy 6, calling it a “battle rush style” of remake. With that in mind, you probably need to know the history of FF6 before diving in.
Each of Final Fantasy 6's characters have been lovingly recreated and given their own strengths and skills based on how they play in the original Final Fantasy 6. Terra, Edgar, Celes, Sabin, Shadow, Cyan, Strago and Locke are all main characters while Mog, Umaro and Banon will all appear as guest characters.
Terra and Celes will have more of an emphasis on magical abilities, while Locke has multiple abilities that allow him to steal from enemies, and Edgar's attacks will all be linked to different weapons.
It's not quite finished yet, as Conman is still tinkering with it and deciding to add new battles and abilities, but a new update for the mod was released not too long ago, which added several battles including the Kefka is the World of Ruin fight. You can find the mod on the Final Fantasy Hacktics website, along with a nice list of credits, detailing everyone who worked on the project.
I haven't dived in myself yet, but I'd love to see Conman recreate some iconic fights like the train or the many, many fights with the Ultros. We may be waiting a while for an official Final Fantasy 6 remake, but this is a pretty cool project to follow if you want to play the game in a different way while you wait.
