You might do well to come back with this article in two days. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is not – and I must stress, is not— Confirmed to be formally revealed at the Summer Game Fest showcase event on Friday, but odds are pretty good that it will be. Rebirth made its first splash there in 2023, and with all the talk series director Naoki Hamaguchi has been making about the upcoming finale all over the internet, it sure feels like the best time to take the lid off.
It's no wonder fans are eager to put last-minute predictions on the subtitle…
Forum games, serious business
This ResetEra thread is hardly the only place on the internet full of subtext conjecture this week, but it's exceptional because the thread's creator, LaytonWright, has struck a deal with gaming forum community administration. Whoever gets it right will receive an otherwise unobtainable profile banner: “The Knights of the Round.”
Now my own Era banner is “Video Game Journalist”. With a nice little “Verified” marker too. I don't know if I would necessarily want to change it! But maybe! I really don't know FF7 Remake Part 3's subtitle, regardless. But it's been fun to see what people have chosen.
Top of the list here, as well as in an overall trilogy-capper speculation thread, is “Final Fantasy 7 Return.” Quoting the first person to mention it, a user who goes by the name The Unsent, “Final Fantasy 7 Return, like Return to The Planet, seems obvious to me.” Given the plot implications, to say nothing of the fact that there's a pretty good chance we'll be able to traverse the entire planet… I can see that. Many nods of agreement have followed. Enough, in fact, that there will be quite a number of “Knights of the Round” if that were to happen.
Others stick with “Final Fantasy 7 Reunion”. Which is the choice most fans tend to make when they are not aware of the developers' publicly expressed sadness at choosing that subtitle for Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion four years ago. Since they said outright that this means it's off the table, there's pretty good reason to assume that's the long and short of it — but never say never, because some are betting on Reunion anyway, even aware of what was said.
“Final Fantasy 7 Reclaim” has a lot of votes. Revive, Revival and Requiem also make a fair dent. (My personal guess is actually Revival, by the way.) Reprise, Redemption, Recall, Remembrance, Revelation, Reunite, Returns, Reexperience, Reverse, Revenge, Renaissance, Reborn, Reunion, Retold, Renew, Recall, Reunite, Redeem, and Retribution all have voices without taking a deep breath, and no, at least I wouldn't take a deep breath.
Can you imagine if Part 3 didn't actually start with “Re-“?
It's worth noting, LaytonWright is also running a secondary contest, where everyone is taking a stab in the dark regarding Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's release date. Get it right (somehow) and you'll get the “One Winged Angel” profile banner instead. Somehow you get them both right, and I don't even know what's wrong with you, but you should probably play the lottery.
