Fairy Tail is a legendary shonen series from the 2000s and 2010s that was once popular alongside the likes of One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. Written by Hiro Mashima, the manga and then the anime cemented itself as a Shonen staple of its era. 9 years ago, in 2017, Fairy Tail officially ended, and although it still received newer projects, such as 100 Years Quest, fans still look forward to work specifically handled by Hiro Mashima himself.
Lucky for everyone Fairy Tail fans, in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the franchise, Fairy Tail returns with a new short serialization manga by Hiro Mashima on July 29, 2026. This series finally has a title, and it's called Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia.
Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia officially announced for the 20th anniversary of the franchise, releasing on July 29, 2026
Fairy Tail is a brilliant story that debuted in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine on August 2, 2006. The series would continue to be serialized in the magazine for 11 years after, before reaching its final stretch in July 2017. With the story beginning to be serialized in 2006, 2026 marks its 20th anniversary, which is a major milestone. For this occasion, fans were waiting for Hiro Mashima, the creator, to release something new. Fortunately, this gift from the author turned out to be a new Fairy Tail manga, originally slated for an August release.
While the new manga was supposed to be published in August 2026, Mashima's hard work made it possible to give it an early release in July. Now the official release date has been pushed forward to July 29, 2026 in Weekly Shōnen Magazine Issue #35. This project has been a complete mystery for a while, but finally, more information about it is trickling in now.
Recently, Hiro Mashima was invited as a valued guest to a major French event, the Amiens Comics Festival. This event saw a massive Fairy Tail exhibition of brand new art from Mashima. There, Hiro Mashima also went on to reveal the name of the manga he will be working on next. The short serialization sequel will be called Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia. Currently, the number of chapters this story will contain is unknown, but all of us Fairy Tail fans can't wait for Mashima's grand return to the series.

What will Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia be about?
We are all excited for the next one Fairy Tail manga, but fans may also be wondering what the next project might be about. Right now, information about this project is extremely limited, and the name Re:Fantasia doesn't give much away either, which raises the curiosity even more. At the Amiens Comics Festival event, some fans reported that Hiro Mashima gave away more information about this upcoming manga. It seems that Fantasia will have Laxus as the main focus.
As Fairy Tail fans already know, Laxus Dreyar is the grandson of Makarov Dreyar, Fairy Tail's guildmaster. Laxus got off to a rough start, but ended up becoming a fan favorite. His character is really interesting, and his powers even more so, as a dragon slayer with lightning magic. Exact details of this new Laxus story should become more apparent as the release approaches. We can also expect other iconic characters from Fairy Tail as the main cast, which includes Natsu, Lucy and Erza among others.

Other projects are coming next for Fairy Tail
Fairy Tail is definitely not on top popularity anymore. 10 years ago it was considered one of the most influential shonen series out there and a must-watch, but since then it's quietly taken a back seat and let newer stories shine. This was especially the case with the loss of fan interest due to 100 Year Quest and subsequently the lackluster adaptation of said story.
That said, Fairy Tail has definitely not been forgotten, even if it has fallen in popularity over time. The 100 Year Quest is still ongoing. Even if the artist isn't Hiro Mashima, it's still his story that fans get to enjoy every other week. The beginning of Re:Fantasia will have no effect on 100 Year Quest, so fans can actually enjoy them side by side.
As for the anime, the final batch of episodes for Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest aired in January 2025, and a new season is coming, although a release date has not been announced yet. Hiro Mashima's work more than deserves an exciting adaptation, and with enough success, Re:Fantasia could also eventually be animated in the future. Fairy Tail is definitely a series that needs a full revival, but nothing like that has been hinted at so far.
