Echoes of Wisdom – Runaway Horse Quest Walkthrough

Quick links

With a much larger map than previous classics Zelda games, it is not surprising that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom features horses for Zelda to ride. These trusty mounts make traversing Hyrule much faster, but not so fast that you feel like you're missing out. Zelda will have the ability to find a horse quite early Echo of wisdom, and this guide will show you exactly how to do it.

To bring in a horse Echo of wisdom, you must complete the “Runaway Horse” side quest. This gives Zelda access to first horse in the game. Later in the game, Zelda will be able to get her own special horse, but it will require bypassing the main quest “Still Missing” and completing “Impa's Gift”. Here we will show you how to get a base horse as early as possible.

How to start “Runaway Horse” in Echoes of Wisdom

Visit Hyrule Ranch:

For first horse in Echo of wisdom, called a hired horse, Zelda must get to Lease Ranch in western Hyrule. This can be done at any time after completing “The Mysterious Cracks” and the first main dungeon in Suthorn Ruins.

When you arrive at Hyrule Ranch, make your way into the main courtyard and you'll find an old man with a quest marker over his head. When talking to the man, he will reveal that he is not currently lending out horses because there is a lack of a mount. He tasks Zelda with helping to find it. Once the horse is returned, Zelda will have access to the horse for herself.

The old man gives Zelda a hint: the horse likes to graze west of the ranch. With that knowledge, it will be a quick trip to pick up the horse. Make your way west to the small pond shown on the map. You will find that the horse is stuck on an island in the middle of the pond. Zelda can jump directly to the pond, but you have to put down a bed for the horse to cross.

Once you're out of the pond, make your way back to Hyrule Ranch. When you arrive, the old man will be overjoyed that the horse is back safely, and he will agree to let you use any horse you want. From now on, you can use the ranch's horses as “hire horses”. This is an important difference, as it means that Zelda will not yet be able to call the horse back to her should you separate. Currently, the rental horse will appear on the map as a horse icon, but that's it.

Be sure to activate the fast travel marker at the ranch so you can return at any time, in case you lose track of your horse and it can't be found on the map.

Zelda will be able to get her beloved white horse later in the game. This will be possible after “Still Missing” is completed and the guards are no longer looking for Zelda.
