The Operations research tree is a good option regardless of your goals. There you can have your team of researchers research power upgrades, staff center improvements, and security cameras. Power upgrades will unlock useful installations like substations and pylons that let you move away from backup generators. Staff Center upgrades allow you to improve your researchers' abilities, and security cameras automatically dispatch Ranger Teams if any dangerous situations break out near an enclosure.
Once you've got the basics out of the way, you should move on to the research Dig sites.
