One of the most interesting mechanics within Dragon Quest 3 Remake is the ability to change character skins. Changing a character's vocation will change roles, change the equipment they can use, halve their stats, and start them back at level one.

Dragon Quest 3 Remake: Most Useful Abilities
These are the abilities that will help you get through Dragon Quest 3 Remake.
But they will level up faster than they did before, and they will remember all their old spells and abilities. This means you can basically create profession combos, create new roles that can do things that no role could have done before, and make party lineups that aren't otherwise possible.
Unlock all spells and abilities first
Before changing your character's vocation in Alltrades Abbey, make sure you have done so unlocked all the spells and abilities you would want with that class.
Leveling up your new vocation will unlock the spells and abilities for the new vocation, so if there is a high level spell or ability that you want with your original vocation, you must unlock it before switching.
How to make a sage
This career change is the easiest but perhaps also the most valuable. The Sage is the only class that you can't play right from the start; to have a Sage you need either level up a Gadabout to level 20or bring one Word of Wisdom book for Alltrades Abbey.
The Sage is best endgame magic-wielding calling as it exists, can use both Mage and Priest spells. Changing any character that wields magic to a Sage will be a good move as it will make them more versatile.
Best Offensive Profession Combinations
On the more creatively minded profession changes to make, these two changes are focused on making a character capable of cause heavier damage or injury in one more different ways.
Martial Artist | Monster Wrangler
Change a Martial artist into one Monster Wrangler will create a character that can wield a much wider range of weapons compared to the Martial Artist, and give them some massive multi-target damage capacity on top of Martial Artists already strong single target damage alternative.
Ability |
Calling |
Description |
---|---|---|
Wind sickles |
Martial artist |
Wind Sickles is a fantastic ability that hits very regularly, dealing a significant amount of wind damage. High damage with one target. |
Hawkeye Claw |
Martial artist |
A near-guaranteed hit that's good for enemies that have a high chance of dodging attacks, like Metal Slimes. |
Boulder Toss |
Monster Wrangler |
This has a high MP cost so should be used sparingly, but it deals an incredible amount of damage to every enemy. |
Soothing song |
Monster Wrangler |
This heals each party member by a small amount, providing a small amount of support to your lineup. |
Emergency groom |
Monster Wrangler |
This heals a more significant amount of health for a single ally, making this character a bit more versatile than a simple damage dealer. |
Martial Artist | Magician
Ability/Spell |
Calling |
Description |
---|---|---|
Wind sickles |
Martial artist |
Perfect for single target damage. |
Hawkeye Claw |
Martial artist |
A great, almost guaranteed attack, which is especially useful for a spellcaster. |
Drain magic |
Magician |
Drain Magic both reduces your enemies' MP and replenishes some of yours, allowing you to go further on the same MP pool. |
Multi-Target Spells (Sizzle, Bang, etc.) |
Magician |
Mage has access to many multi-target attacks, and the more you know your enemies' weaknesses, the more you'll be able to exploit them with these spells. |
Similar to the last summon change, this will give the character very different weapon options compared to the Monster Wrangler. To make one Martial artist into one Magician will do much the same in terms of multi-target damage, creating more opportunities.
You can go the other way with this switch, from a wizard to a martial artist, and enjoy the critical hits of the martial artist with the versatility of having access to the wizard's spells. The downside would be the lower MP pool.
Best Support Profession Combinations
These cold changes are meant to create characters that can provide a wider range of support. Instead of relying on two different characters to provide two different types of support, you can create a character that can support hybrids.
Priest | Warrior
Move from a Priest into one Warrior ensures that you have a character that can provide some of the best healing spells in the game at the same time as well tank damage for the entire group.
As a bonus, it also means you'll be able to heal a significant amount and use a weapon that can also deal single-target damage.
Ability/Spell |
Calling |
Description |
---|---|---|
Healing spells |
Priest |
Cleric's healing spells allow you to tank damage with Warrior and heal that damage on your next turn. |
Resurrection Spells |
Priest |
Resurrection Spells won't be of any value to this character personally, but they will increase their value as part of a party. |
Whipping Boy/Patience |
Warrior |
Whipping Boy and Patience are your warrior abilities that will allow you to take damage, as opposed to other party members taking it. |
Monster Wrangler | Priest
Go the other way with this one, change one Monster Wrangler into one Priest will limit your weapon options significantly, but as a support character it's not too crucial.
This is cominghowever, give you one litany of healing options, with Soothing Song combined with the Priest's large targeted heals and the abolitionist ability of both professions.
Ability/Spell |
Calling |
Description |
---|---|---|
War cry |
Monster Wrangler |
With War Cry, you can target the entire enemy lineup and strike fear into any enemies that the attack doesn't miss, causing them to miss their turn. |
Soothing song |
Monster Wrangler |
This is a great group heal, allowing you to give a small heal to everyone to keep them at or around max health. |
Healing spells |
Priest |
The cleric has access to even more healing spells, giving them easy healing options for characters who are low on health. |
Snooze |
Priest |
Snooze is similar to War Cry in that it can cause enemies to miss their turn; Snooze doesn't target all enemies at once, but it can last for more than one turn. |

Dragon Quest 3 Remake: How To Change Jobs
Changing jobs is a simple but involved process in DQ3 Remake. This is how you do it.
Best balanced career combinations
These cold changes are meant to create characters that can fits into a variety of roleswhich allows them to fit into almost any lineup's needs.
Priest | Martial artist
Going from Priest to Martial artist will no doubt hurt MP reserves a bit. But they will still have more MP than an original martial artist would have had, and with the extra MP they will have some significant support opportunities.
Ability/Spell |
Calling |
Description |
---|---|---|
Healing spells |
Priest |
The four levels of healing spells available to the cleric will increase the value of your martial artist, allowing the character to be a hybrid instead of a strict damage dealer. |
Sap |
Priest |
Sap lowers an enemy's defense and is a great way for a Priest spell to create a massive damaging attack on the character with a martial arts attack next turn. |
Resurrection Spells |
Priest |
The priest's resurrection spells would ensure that your party has more resurrection options than just the hero. |
Wind sickles |
Martial artist |
Again, Wind Sickles is a great single target damage option. |
Hawkeye Claw |
Martial artist |
The guaranteed hit of Hawkeye Claw would ensure that Sap is not wasted. |
Warrior | Monster Wrangler
A Warrior-made-Monster Wrangler wouldn't quite have the single target healing options that the previous character would have, but they would have some significant ones multi-target and single-target damage optionsall at the same time as you can tank damage for the rest of the lineup and provide healing to all allies at once.
Ability |
Calling |
Description |
---|---|---|
Mercurial Thrust |
Warrior |
A great single target attack that does good damage and ensures that this character gets to act first on the turn. |
Whipping Boy/Patience |
Warrior |
With these, this character can take damage meant for other party members without being a character entirely dedicated to support. |
Boulder Toss/Monster Pile-On |
Monster Wrangler |
These deal heavy multi-target damage, complementing the Warrior's more single-target damage, allowing this character to deal significant damage in any scenario. |
Soothing song |
Monster Wrangler |
When the party needs a pick-me-up and not a big heal, Soothing Song does the trick. |
Nickname changes for passive bonuses
There are a couple of professions that characters can completely change into for convenient passive bonuses: Merchant and that Thief. That's not to say these classes aren't useful otherwise, but their passive bonuses are what set them apart.
Merchant
Change to one Merchant means your party gets one passively increasing the amount of gold they receive at the end of each battle. It's not much, but over the course of an entire dungeon, this bonus adds up to quite a lot.
They are not the best class in offensive or defensive capabilities, so you will be relies heavily on the abilities and spells you already know.
Thief
The Thief is a little more flexible than the merchant and provides its own value in addition to the passive. But the passive bonus it gives can be extremely nice, gives you the chance to get extra items at the end of a battle.
If the item becomes useful, that's good. But if not, it's an item you get to sell, and it will increase your gold the same way the merchant does, just with extra steps.
