Assassin's Creed Shadows associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois had admitted that the game's original ending didn't “resonate” with players as Ubisoft hoped, which is something the final update aims to fix.
Without a doubt, Assassin's Creed Shadows is one of the most divisive games the franchise has ever seen. While most of it has to do with culture war issues that have plagued Shadows since it was first announced, there is also a fair amount of fair and legitimate criticism of Naoe and Yasuke's crusade through feudal Japan.
One of the biggest complaints players had about Shadows is its story, particularly its anticlimactic ending that comes out of nowhere without much fanfare or resolution for any of the characters. Now, more than a year later, Shadow's associate game director has acknowledged how disappointing the ending is and has decided to fix it with the game's latest update.

Black Tides aims to fix that while remembering that the Templars exist
Yesterday, Assassin's Creed Shadows' final update was released, which includes Black Tide's final mission to end Naoe and Yasuke's story for good. Alongside that update, a surprisingly honest blog post was shared on the official Assassin's Creed website, confirming that the developers are well aware of the feedback given for the base game.

Assassin's Creed Shadows Review – A Feudal Return To Form
Despite the weight of the world on its shoulders, Assassin's Creed Shadows is a fantastic entry in the series with one of its best worlds to date.
In the post, associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois was asked what he hopes players will come away with after beating Dark Tides. In response, Lemay-Comtois admits that certain story elements from the main game “didn't resonate” with players as the developers hoped, which is what the team aims to “address” in the update.
I hope the community is happy with where we leave our two protagonists – and hopefully get even more excited for Black Flag Resynced in the process. – Simon Lemay-Comtois
One of the criticisms the update aims to address is the main story's noticeable lack of Templars, which Lemay-Comtois agrees was a miss. The teaser for Black Tides makes it clear that the Templars play a key role in it, so it seems like some feedback has definitely been picked up. As for giving Shadows a proper conclusion, we'll have to wait and see how players react to it.
