Any inanimate object with a devil fruit

Zoan Devil Fruits are said to have their own wills, even before they are consumed. This seems to partially explain the fascinating phenomenon of inanimate objects managing to “consume” a Zoan. This was apparently a method discovered by Dr. Vegapunk some time before the main story.

One Piece: 5 Important Non-One Piece Artifacts

The One Piece is just one of many artifacts of indescribable significance. Here are some others that are important in this beloved anime.

Like any living creature that consumes a Zoan, inanimate objects can take on the characteristics of the animal whose devil fruit they consumed. Unfortunately, they also have the weaknesses associated with a living being, such as pain, fear, and vulnerability to disease. These items have all proven to be quite loyal to their owners.

6 Lasso

Babe's Bazooka

Mr.4's Dog is an inanimate object with a devil fruit

  • Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund
  • Debut: Chapter 160 (Manga), Episode 103 (Anime)

Babe, otherwise known as Mr. 4 of the Baroque Works, is the first person noted to own a Zoan object. His dachshund bazooka, Lassoo, fires explosive baseballs that weigh as much as cannonballs that Babe hits with his mighty 4-ton baseball bat. Lassoo is very obedient and is willing to shoot when his owner asks. Since escaping from prison, Babe has been living out his dream of becoming a pizza delivery boy and working as one at the recently reopened Spiders Cafe. Lassoo serves as the cafe's mascot.

It is unclear exactly how Babe came into possession of Lassoo. Despite his strength, Babe is notably unintelligent, enough so that Crocodile gave the weaker Galdino a higher rank than him. It is possible that, despite being categorized as a recent breakthrough, the actual science behind the creation of a Zoan object is easily replicated. If Zoans have minds of their own, it's equally possible that Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund simply wanted Babe's gun.

5 Funkfree

Sword of Spandam

Funkfree, backed by Spandam and the Marines confront Franky and Robin

  • Devil Fruit: Zou Zou no Mi
  • Debut: Chapter 365 (Manga), Episode 254 (Anime)

Spandam is a completely incompetent agent of the World Government, having offered his previous leadership positions in Cipher Pol 9 and 5, due to nepotism rather than any kind of genuine skill. He is loathed by his own colleagues, as well as by those who have been offended by his and his father's actions. Despite the World Government being the ones who give him the level of protection he has, he even conspired to overthrow them, and wasn't punished too harshly when he failed. He is the other known owner of a Zoan item, possessing an elephant sword called Funkfreed.

Funkfreed is Spandam's only companion, and likely his only means of defense, due to his own pathetic physical strength. Spandam is also not very skilled at swordplay, meaning that Funkfreed is basically without his direct help in most fights. Like its owner, Funkfreed is quite the coward and a poor fighter to boot. This is reflected in the sword's friendly and unassuming elephant-like appearance. Although Funkfreed's backstory is not developed, Spandam is shown to have had an elephant as a pet in his childhood, possibly cementing his affinity for the animal.

4 Smiley

Caesar Clown's poison gas

Smiley

  • Devil Fruit: Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl
  • Debut: Chapter 668 (Manga), Episode 594 (Anime)

Caesar Clown is a scientist who previously worked with Dr. Vegapunk. Unlike his counterpart, Caesar is known to be deeply unethical and cares little whether others live or die as a result of his actions. Smiley is one of his many deadly experiments. The creature originated as an illegal chemical weapon of mass destruction, which Caesar detonated on Punk Hazard.

When Caesar returned to the island, he compressed the HS2 gas from the explosion into a slime, which he then “fed” the Devil Fruit, so that Smiley was “born”. This proves that Zoan Fruits can be “eaten” by things that aren't purely solid. Caesar decided to release Smiley to kill the Straw Hat Pirates and G-5 Marines who were on the island. As a purely poisonous creature, it killed Caesar's men when released as well. Ultimately, it was countered, but not defeated by Luffy and his companions.

Family

One Piece: Villains Who Helped Luffy

Throughout One Piece, these obnoxious pirates fought alongside Monkey D. Luffy to face a greater enemy.

Instead, Caesar killed the creature himself by feeding it a substance that resembled a wrapped candy. This caused Smiley to feel excruciating pain and turned its “corpse” into a petrifying gas known as Shinokuni. This makes Smiley the first Zoan Inanimate Object to have “died” in the series. A nearby apple turned into a devil fruit when Smiley died, which presumably means that Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl can now claim another one.

3 Bunbuku

Kozuki Sukiyaki's teapot

Bunbuku, a living teapot that ate a tanuki devil fruit

  • Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Tanuki
  • Debut: Chapter 911 (Manga), Episode 894 (Anime)

Kozuki Sukiyaki was the former Shogun of Wano Country and the former Daimyo of Kuri. He is also the father of the late Kozuki Oden. Since his deposition, Sukiyaki has been in hiding, living under the alias Tenguyama Hitetsu. During this time, he has served as a mentor to Kurozumi Tama, despite the historical enmity between their clans. After Momonosuke was established as Shogun and regained power for the Kozuki clan, Sukiyaki remained hidden, revealing himself only to a select few. As a hermit, he is the owner of the last identified Zoan object in canon, a Tanuki teapot called Bunbuku.

The Bunbuku is notable as the only canon Zoan item to date that is not a weapon of some kind. Instead, it was a simple Sukiyaki teapot that was owned before its transformation. Its name is a reference to Bunbuku Chagamaa Japanese folktale about a tanuki who becomes a teapot. Since it is now a living being, Bunbuku cannot be used to boil water, as that would harm it. Bunbuku instead appears to be a pet for Sukiyaki and Tama, usually accompanying one or the other at certain points in the story.

2 Alpacacino

Shuzo's Bazooka

Alpacacino in hybrid form, part alpaca, part bazooka

  • Devil Fruit: Currently Nameless
  • Debut: Episode 575
  • Note: This character is non-canon

Shuzo was a longarm formerly a member of the Neo Marines, the splinter movement created by Z, a former admiral, who felt that the marines were not doing enough to punish pirates. He wants to usurp the second-in-command of the organization from Ain, despite her overpowering him in their battle for the position. As a result, he refuses to follow her orders. Shuzo was eventually defeated by Luffy and subsequently arrested by Vice Admiral Momonga, who claimed that he should be sent to Impel Down.

One Piece: 5 characters modeled from pop culture

Oda has modeled some of his characters on figures in popular culture. Below are some examples.

Alpacacino is Shuzo's alpacabazooka. Like Lassoo, the transformation into an animal has not hindered his function as a bazooka. Alpacacino tends to nod in agreement with his owner, though he doesn't seem above criticizing Shuzo if necessary, such as when he gave away their identity as Neo Marines. His name probably comes from the iconic American actor Al Pacino.

1 Pato

Patrick Redfield's pencil

Patrick Redfield with his living pencil, Pato

  • Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Bake-danuki
  • Debut: One Piece: Unlimited World Red
  • Note: This character is non-canon

Patrick “Red” Redfield was a pirate who was considered a rival to the likes of Roger and Whitebeard in his prime. But his own lack of subsequent impact has meant that he has become far less well-known than either of them since then. Red was formerly a Level 6 prisoner in Impel Down, who was accidentally freed by Teach during his attempt to recruit from Level 6 prisoners into the Blackbeard Pirates.

Red's longtime companion is Pato, a Bake-danuki Pen. While Pato's Devil Fruit has similar roots to Bunbuku's, it is characterized by being a mythical zoan, while Bunbuku's Devil Fruit is based on the real-life Tanuki. Pato can turn leaves into objects and people by writing on them with his tail, which looks like the tip of a pencil. Pato was previously divorced from Red after his incarceration. When Red escaped, he respected his former companion, believing that Pato had abandoned him.

However, after Monkey D. Luffy gains his respect, Red decides to rebuild his friendship with Pato, and the two become companions again. Pato, in particular, is the alias Red was known by as a rookie, which suggests that he has great value to him. Pato is relatively unique among inanimate object Zoans, as he is capable of speech.
