Alleged early GTA 6 copy turns out to be PC-killing virus

Grand Theft Auto 6 fever is reaching an all-time high. With just a few months to go until launch, and with a lack of promotion compared to its predecessor, fans have continued to trawl through trailers, examine screenshots, and revert to Rockstar's old posting habits to try and decipher whatever information they can about the game.

However, one somewhat noisy Redditor believed that they would no longer have to rely on wild theories and speculations to get their GTA 6 fix, believing that they had gotten their hands on a copy of the game early. However, it turned out that what they downloaded was not an advanced copy of GTA 6, but instead a virus that has rendered much of their PC unusable.

Beware of “early” copies of GTA 6, as one player has found out the hard way

“'Your leaks are fake, you have no insider.' Oh yes? Guess who just got early access to the game,” started a thread on Reddit, with a screenshot of an alleged GTA 6 download. “And no, I'm not giving it to any of you deniers/haters. So don't even bother asking,” it signed off.

Believing they had acquired an early copy of GTA 6, the poster decided to turn to the r/GTA6unmoderated community's 136,000 weekly visitors. However, they were quickly forced to eat a slice of humble pie.

A second thread, started not long after the first, this time ir/computer virus, exclaimed: “Computer messed up after running a file I thought was trusted.” The thread continued, “Downloaded an executable installer from someone I thought was trustworthy, ran through the wizard then a cmd window opened for a split second and now my computer is really slow. After I restarted it took over a minute to log in, which is not normal for me at all. I don't need to be lectured on this, I need help!”

The user also claimed that their “Windows key has since stopped working, along with the search bar,” and that they are experiencing a “strange ghosting effect” on their cursor. This really seems like a nasty virus.

Now, there's every possibility that this user is trying to troll Reddit (and ourselves), but there's also every possibility that they're not. Their account is years old and filled with dozens of comments across a variety of subreddits. Until now, it looks like a regular Reddit account with no recent history of trolling. Regardless, it serves as a warning to players not to download anything they see on the internet.

If the user had done a little research, they would have found that, at least a couple of months ago, Grand Theft Auto 6 wasn't even content complete. However, it's likely we won't have to wait much longer to hear more about the game, with May 21 cited as the latest date before Rockstar shares more.
