All legendary Pokemon and how to get them in Pokemon Legends: ZA

Perhaps the most exciting part of any game in the Pokemon series is catching the super rare and very powerful legendary Pokemon, and Pokemon Legends: ZA is no exception to that hype. However, unlike previous titles, you will have to complete the entire game before you finally manage to get your hands on a single one.

These legendaries are no joke either, requiring you to complete a set of small tasks before being thrown into a grueling battle against the clock. Like alpha Pokemon, legendary Pokemon have little room for error. To catch them all, all the practice and precision you've acquired on your journey will be needed here.

How to start the quest for legendary Pokemon

The player receives the mission, "The future of Lumiose City" in Pokemon Legends: ZA after the game.

Legendary Pokemon are locked to post-game content. They have much higher base stats than regular Pokemon and are Shiny-locked (meaning you cannot capture their shining forms).

There are only three legendaries you can catch:

You will need complete all main quests until you unlock the credit sequence. This means that all content below will contain major spoilers, so keep in mind that this is yours:

Spoiler alert!!!

AZ's Floette is not a legendary Pokemon, but it is unlocked and can only be caught once. We've added a section for her unique acquisition as a special Pokemon.

Lysandre talks to the player about AZ in the epilogue of Pokemon Legends: ZA.

After the credits roll, you must begin Main Quest 39: The Infinite ZA Royale. Once you have completed a single reward match against the infamous taxi driver, you will receive a phone call asking you to do so back to Hotel Z.

When you enter the door, a cutscene will play leading to activation of the legendary quests:

  • The Giver (Xerneas)

  • The One Who Takes (Yveltal)

You can tackle these quests in any order, but you have to complete both before you might get the opportunity to both challenge the final secret boss and capture Zygarde.

The Giver: How to capture Xerneas

Mable tells the player that she has found alphas linked to Xerneas in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

Your task to capture Xerneas begins by paying a visit to Pokemon Research Lab. Talk to Mable, and she will task you with defeat three unique alpha Pokemon in the following zones:

  • Zone 3: Steelix

  • Zone 5: Galled

  • Zone 9: Pangoro

You can defeat or capture all three of these alphas. Regardless, they must be removed in some way from their wild range to count.

Xerneas appears in front of the player in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

Go back to Mable and she will alert you to a strange presence in the Zone 11 (the one with all the horrible stun fish). Go down to the grass area on southern shorelineand you can Examine to make Xerneas appear.

This is a battle scenario where you have to capture Xerneas. Although it is not possible to fail to catch it (which Xerneas will thankfully reappear after), we recommend saves in front of Xerneas to reset too good stats.

The Taker: How to Catch Yveltal

Vinnie tells the player and Team Flare Nouveau that they have identified Yveltal in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

When this main quest is active, you should do it visit Nouveau Cafe. As you approach, you'll get a cutscene where you talk to Griselle and Grisham. Your dialogue choices don't matter here, so exhaust the dialogue until they mention Quasartico Inc.

At Quasartico Inc., approaches Vinnie will trigger yet another cutscene after which you unlock the ability to rechallenge simulations of previously fought Rogue Mega Pokemon. You will need defeat three to unlock Yveltal:

  1. Tyrants

  2. Victreebel

  3. Hawlucha

Each of these will be enhanced versions of their older selves, appears at level 70. You won't get help from your old MZ colleagues either.

The player stands on top of the gallery building to investigate Yveltal's return in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

When you're done with your bouts of nostalgia, you'll get a warning that Yveltal is approaching. Therefore go to Rouge District shopping center: Galleria de la Lune.

Yveltal will be on the roof of the gallery, requiring you to climb onto the roof via position on the northwest side of the gallery (near zone 3). Once at the top you must use your Rotom Glide to get on top of the dome structure and Examine in the center.

Just like Xerneas, you cannot avoid capturing Yveltal. However, we still recommend saving if you want to reset for better stats.

How to catch Zygarde

L challenges the player to a battle in front of Hotel Z in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

Once you have captured both Xerneas and Yveltal, you have all the requirements to capture Zygarde. However, unlike all previous major events, there are no main mission directives to point you in the right direction. Without a prompt you can back to Hotel Z after capturing both legendaries to trigger L's arrival.

When L appears, he comes challenge you to a battle. He's the strongest trainer you'll face in Legends: ZA, so you should definitely bring your best Pokemon. His law is as such:

The player prepares to challenge Zygarde to a battle under the Prism Tower in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

After you defeat L, Zygarde will appear and give you your final mission, Main Mission 42: To Keep The World In Balance. This will prompt you to do so follow it to zone 20.

Zygarde awaits you under the remains of Prism Tower. Here you will have your final Pokemon boss fight against Zygarde itself, and it will appear as level 84 in three steps:

  1. 10 percent

  2. 50 percent

  3. Fill out the form

Zygarde is thankfully very easy to face, with weaknesses against Dragon and Fairy and a x4 weakness to Ice. The biggest threat it poses is with its wide area attacks throughout the form.

We recommend purchasing a level one or two Green Canary plush just to be safe in case of accidents during the completion phase. Recovery can be time consuming and frustrating over a small avoidable error.

The player directs Meganium to battle Complete Form Zygarde in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

Once Zygarde's final form is defeated in battle, you will have a chance to throw a Poke Ball at it. This ball will always succeed, so throw one that you think Zygarde would look cool in.

With Zygarde captured, L greets you again to give you Zygarde Cube. This allows Zygarde to change form during battle. Of course you already have Zygarditeso you have everything you need for your newest team member.

How to get AZ's Floette

The player battles Urbain in a reward match in Infinite Royale in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

AZ's Floette (also known as Eternal Flower Floette) may not be a legendary Pokemon, but it is certainly special. You just can get one per saved fileand the ways to finally get her are quite time and energy consuming.

To unlock the right to acquire AZ's Floette, you must take on Infinite Royale. Not once, not twice, but 15 times. It means:

  1. Get 50,000 points for a challenger ticket

  2. Defeat the random Reward Match opponent

  3. Complete 14 reward matches

We recommend grinding nights, but be aware of your card points. By refraining from completely clearing certain cards, like 20,000 point cards, in the middle, you can collect enough of a challenge ticket, make a reward match, and return the same night to quickly clear a second, and maybe even a third, challenge ticket in the same cycle. We did this and managed to clear all 15 reward matches in eight nights instead of 14.

Mega Floette uses Light of Ruin on Mega Scolipede in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

On your 15th reward match, you must do so face your rival as your opponent. This time, your rival will appear with Pokemon around level 70.

After defeating your rival, return to Quasartico Inc.. There, entering the building will trigger a long cutscene, answering questions about your rival's past, but – and more importantly – also rewarding you with both AZ's Floette and that Floettite for its Mega Evolution.
