The new Kingdom Come game's leaked title basically confirms its story

As someone who considers himself the greatest Kingdom Come: Deliverance hell to ever live, I wake up every morning hoping to hear more news about the next game in the franchise. So imagine my excitement when today I was met with an apparent leak regarding the next entry's title, which will presumably be Kingdom Come: Salvation rather than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3just as I first suspected. Considering the road Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 ended, Henry's narration of the first two games, Tom McKay's seemingly final mocap session for the series, and the fact that Warhorse deliberately called the next game “a new Kingdom Come adventure” when they first announced it, I had a strong feeling that the series would take a somewhat drastic turn.

However, it does not necessarily mean next Kingdom Come the game won't see the story so far completely ignored in favor of something completely new, especially given that Warhorse seems intent on releasing the next entry in the next year or two. What I mean by that, firstly, is that this goal for such a quick turnaround likely means the next one Kingdom Come will once again be set in medieval Bohemia, as Warhorse basically wouldn't be forced to rebuild a whole new world and therefore could get the game to shelves much faster. However, the other variable to consider is the leaked title. If the newly filed trademark supposedly leaked the title really belongs to the next Kingdom Come game, then “Salvation” confirms everything but its story.

Kingdom Come: Salvation would most likely be about saving Wenceslaus

The most obvious explanation for the word “Salvation” is that the next game will most likely be about rescuing King Wenceslaus, who has technically been the driving force behind the franchise's overarching political conflict from the very beginning. Henry's personal journey may have begun with the destruction of Skalitz and his desire to avenge his parents, but everything that happens around him has been the result of Sigismund imprisoning Wenceslaus, invading Bohemia, and trying to secure the kingship for himself. That conflict doesn't magically disappear at the end of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2either. In fact, the sequel ends with Wenceslaus still absent and imprisoned, leaving the most important political problem of the series unresolved.

Sure enough, Henry and company manage to give Sigismund a pretty solid beating before the credits roll. After robbing their silver reserves and rescuing the captured lords of Kuttenberg, the group retreats to Suchdol, survives another siege, and finally forces Sigismund and his army to abandon Bohemia for the time being. However, that victory only removes Sigismund from the board temporarily. It doesn't restore Wenceslaus to the throne, and it certainly doesn't get him out of captivity. So, while Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 wraps up Henry's revenge story much more definitively than the first game did, it only ends to resolve the conflict responsible for that story in the first place.

That would already make rescuing Wenceslaus a natural direction for the next game, but the story makes the set-up feel almost too perfect to ignore. Wenceslaus historically escaped his imprisonment in Vienna on November 11, 1403, just months after the historical events that Warhorse adapted to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. More importantly, he did it with the help of John II of Liechtenstein, who is not some random historical figure that Warhorse would have to introduce from scratch. John already plays a big role in Liberation 2where Henry warns him of Sigismund's plans and helps keep him alive. After fleeing Vienna, Wenceslaus was escorted through Mikulov, met his followers in Kuttenberg, and eventually returned to Prague at Christmas. In other words, Warhorse already has the event, secondary character, and locations necessary to continue the story almost immediately.

Of course it doesn't mean Kingdom Come: Salvation would have to be a simple prison-break game, nor does it guarantee that Henry would be the one to climb through a window and personally carry Wenceslaus back to Bohemia. The story could follow John of Liechtenstein, introduce a new protagonist working alongside him, or use the king's escape as the start of a much larger campaign to restore order to the kingdom. Still, if the leaked title is legit, “Salvation” feels far too self-aware to ignore. The first two games may end with Sigismund's campaign suffering a major setback, but Bohemia itself has yet to be saved. Its rightful king remains imprisoned, its political future remains uncertain, and history says Wenceslaus' escape is just around the corner.

The Hussite Wars are still possible, but less likely now

Before this apparent title leak, my original prediction was that the next Kingdom Come the game would jump ahead to the Hussite Wars, and I still think that period would fit the series almost perfectly. The conflict erupted after Vaclav's death in 1419, plunging Bohemia into a much larger religious and political crisis, complete with rival factions, massive battles, and some of the most famous figures in Czech history. It would also allow Warhorse to stay in medieval Bohemia while giving the next match a noticeably different atmosphere, as Henry would be older, the political landscape would have changed, and the relatively contained fight against Sigismund would have grown into something much more chaotic.

But about the next one Kingdom Come adventure is actually called Kingdom Come: Salvationthat theory now feels considerably less likely – although certainly not impossible. “Salvation” could easily have a religious meaning and point to Jan Hus, the growing reform movement, and the ideological divisions that would eventually lead to the Hussite Wars. Meanwhile, Warhorse would have to jump straight to 1419 to skip about 16 years after the end of Liberation 2while Wenceslaus's escape from captivity happened only months later and fits the title in a much more immediate, literal way. Hussite Wars may still be where the franchise is ultimately headed, but “Salvation” now looks more like the bridge that gets it there than the game that finally puts players in the middle of it.

At the end of the day, Kingdom Come: Salvation is still just an obvious title leak, so there's every chance Warhorse could come and make this whole theory look ridiculous. Yet when the first two Kingdom Come game leaves Wenceslaus imprisoned, introduces the very man who historically helped him escape, and concludes just months before that escape actually happened, “Salvation” feels like much more than a random subtext. It sounds like the natural continuation of the story Warhorse has already told, even if Henry is no longer the one at the center of it.

I'd still love to see the series eventually get to the Hussite Wars, and I have a hard time believing that Warhorse will ignore that period forever, but rescuing Wenceslaus now seems like the much more immediate destination. Be that as it may, the fact that a leaked word has already sent me this far down the historical rabbit hole is exactly why I love this franchise as much as I do. Now I just need Warhorse to hurry up and tell me if I'm absolutely right or spectacularly wrong.
