Crimson Desert became one of the most anticipated and ambitious games of 2026, and for many players it more than delivered. Despite significant flaws upon release, Pearl Abyss has since released ten major updates in just three short months, with several patches being released in the opening weeks. Although it's a single-player experience, the frequency of updates is more reflective of what you'd expect from a live-service title, and reflects Pearl Abyss' experience working on Black Desert.
I spoke with Will Powers during Summer Game Fest to delve into the team's breakneck update rate, its design philosophy, and plans to bring playability to characters like Damiane and Oongka.
The art of listening to your players
Before the conversation even started, there was a silent question hanging in the air, something the community continues to wonder: how does Pearl Abyss get these updates out so quickly? Well, it's in the company's DNA by now, thanks to its experience developing Black Desert for so many years.
Crimson Desert may be a single-player experience developed by a separate team, but the core principles apply to all games. “The DNA of the company is inherently live service. So even though this is a single-player game, it doesn't change the core identity of who the developers are and how they want to support the community,” Powers tells me.
To put that into perspective, the team at Black Desert has released a weekly update for over 11 years. With that kind of precedent, it's no wonder that Crimson Desert's team has been so quick to respond to player feedback with a series of quick updates, ranging from bug fixes to massive quality-of-life changes, like improving the save system.
So how do they decide which feedback to act on? Powers isn't quick to give away the team's secrets, but he did offer a glimpse behind the development curtain. “We listen intently to every single piece of feedback given to us, but keep the DNA of what the game is,” says Powers. “It's incredibly important because you can very easily listen to minority voices and have them shape the game and lose the core of the game again.”
While he wouldn't provide any specifics, Powers was clear that the team is reviewing feedback from multiple sources, so if you want to write them a letter, your feedback could find its way into a future update.
A bright future for Damiane, Oongka and the Crimson Desert DLC
Another reason why Pearl Abyss has been so quick to address player concerns is that many of them are already aligned with internal feelings. But with big questions now addressed, Powers explains how the studio is acting on its own vision for what's to come. “I think the impression of the initial development after the launch was very reactionary. This is us taking back control.”
On June 2, Pearl Abyss released a Q3 Roadmap, detailing key updates we can expect to see in September. There are no hard dates though, as the team could be ready ahead of schedule, which wouldn't surprise me based on the sizzling update rate so far. “If they want to develop things faster, I'm not going to stop them,” Powers says. Pearl Abyss' primary focus is still on releasing updates when they're ready rather than hitting certain deadlines.
Damiane and Oongka's names stood out among the exciting changes planned on the roadmap, as these party members have been largely in Kliff's shadow thus far. Players have struggled to justify playing as Oongka or Damiane over Kliff due to their obvious limitations, such as the lack of abilities required to solve puzzles. “Game parity is the ultimate goal,” Powers specifies. So while we may not see Damiane or Oongka wrestle the title of protagonist away from Kliff, all three characters will be on equal footing when it comes to experiencing the world and its variety of puzzles.
While changes to Damiane, Oongka, and key sequences are among some of the most exciting updates on the roadmap, there's something even bigger on the horizon: DLC. So far we have only received updatesand despite how massive the overhauls have been, the DLC promises more than those updates, according to Powers. “This is going to be significantly different, whether it's in scope, scale, size, it's going to be different. What that means beyond that, we're not talking about yet.”
Crimson Desert is constantly evolving and growing. Whether it's through the addition of baby Wyvern mounts that can fly almost anywhere or expanding key characters like Damiane and Oongka, Pearl Abyss refuses to let yesterday's missteps become tomorrow's failures.
Its commitment to consistent updates has set the tone for a rapidly evolving single-player experience that redefines our expectations. They've already added unexpected goodies, like a pinball machine, so there's no telling what other surprises may await.
