God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence has revealed that the game's already controversial cube companion Phranque “has always been a part of this story”.
While the Norse God of War games are widely regarded as incredible games and some of the best in the series, they both (especially in Ragnarok's case) suffered from one major complaint – the chatty sidekicks. Companions are a huge part of the game, but many players really didn't do that with constantly being told what was going on in battle and how to complete puzzles.
With that in mind, it's no surprise that God of War Laufey's equally chatty new companion, a gelatinous cube named Phranque, has received a lot of mixed reactions since the game's reveal. It looks like the Phranque haters will have to get on board with him though, as the game's director has confirmed how important he is to the game as a whole.
God Of War Laufey director says its cube buddy has “always” been a part of the game
Looks like Phranque isn't going anywhere
As pointed out by OtakuKart , Flow Games recently had the chance to chat with God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence about the game's reveal during last week's State of Play. When asked what kind of role Phranque plays in the game, Lawrence confirmed that he will be similar to Atreus in the Nordic games, but that she can't reveal too much right now.
Lawrence went on to say that both Phranque and Rue (the band on Faye's sword) are “really important” when it comes to traversal and combat, before revealing that Faye and Phranque were the two Cory Barlog characters the game started with. According to Lawrence, Phranque was one of “the very first things” created for Laufey and has “always been part of the story”.
I'm hesitant about Phranque, considering how talkative Atreus was, but I think anyone who hates him already needs to wait until we see him a bit more. Sony Santa Monica has certainly learned from the criticism that Ragnarok received.
All of this is to say that Phranque is clearly one of the most important parts of God of War Laufey, both in terms of how he is used in the game's combat and the crossover of his role in Faye and Everywen's story. While it seems like the internet has already turned on Phranque, you'll definitely have to get used to him playing a big role in Laufey.
