One Piece Manga Officially Confirms Sudden Break from Eiichiro Oda

The One Piece manga is the best-selling comic book in the entire world, with over 600 million copies in circulation at the moment. This amount of success would not have been possible without Eiichiro Oda's dedication and sacrifice for almost 3 decades now. That being said, due to age and various other reasons, it is becoming more difficult for the author to maintain consistent publication in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump, and the latest hiatus has now been officially confirmed.

Following the release of One Piece chapter 1184 last week on May 31, 2026, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #27, the story goes on hiatus again, as confirmed by Oda. One Piece Chapter 1185 will be delayed, and instead of being released on June 7th, it will now be released on June 14th, 2026.

One Piece Manga officially announces new hiatus on June 7, 2026

One Piece Manga New Break June 7, 2026

One Piece is one of the largest manga series to be consistently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump over the past few decades. The series debuted on July 19, 1997, in issue 34 of Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine, and has continued to dominate ever since. One Piece still continues today regularly, but due to his age and the long publication, Eiichiro Oda needs to rest more often. One Piece Chapter 1184 was officially released last weekend, on May 31, 2026, bringing the month to the end of the series.

Unfortunately, with the release of the chapter came the announcement of another hiatus by the writer, Eiichiro Oda. One Piece Chapter 1185 is now facing a surprise delay, meaning we won't be getting a new chapter this coming weekend, June 7th, 2026, as the series will be skipping Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #28 entirely.

Eiichiro Oda's trip to South Africa for One Piece Live Action Season 3 is the primary reason for the hiatus

Eiichiro Oda South Africa One Piece Live Action Season 3 Break

Eiichiro Oda usually takes breaks after every three chapters, so the news that the series is going on hiatus after just two consecutive chapters came as a surprise to us all. Fans immediately wondered why Oda took a sudden break from the One Piece manga. At first we assumed it was his usual break to recover from the burnout and overload that comes with being a mangaka. However, that is not really the case. Although this break is indeed from Oda himself instead of Weekly Shonen Jump, it is for a different reason.

One Piece will skip Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #28 on June 7, 2026, due to a major project Oda has committed to — The One Piece Live Action by Netflix. Eiichiro Oda was recently seen in a video posted by Netflix, joining the One Piece Live Action cast in South Africa. He was seen interacting with the cast, especially Iñaki Godoy, the actor of Luffy.

This visit is particularly important to Oda as the cast is currently working on the third season of the show following the great success of the first two seasons. His presence there is crucial to the publicity. Considering the time it takes to travel, as well as the time spent there, it's clear why Oda had to take a break and couldn't focus on the manga.

Many One Piece fans are often disappointed when the manga goes on hiatus. Luckily, as with most breaks, this one isn't too long either. While One Piece will skip Jump on June 7, the manga will return just one week after, on June 14, 2026. The series' return will be seen in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #29. After this break, One Piece fans should be able to get 3 chapters in a row, unless unique circumstances arise. In other words, One Piece will see the release of chapters 1185, 1186 and 1187 consecutively after this new hiatus.

Flashback Esperia Kingdom One Piece 1185

The worst thing about the latest One Piece interruption is the exciting cliffhanger Oda left the story on during the climax of the ongoing Elbaf arc. Just before this break, One Piece went into his second main Elbaf flashback in chapter 1183, which was released in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump issue #26, this time covering the mysterious events of the Esperia Kingdom from 70 years ago, focusing on characters such as Brook as well as Shuri, a former princess turned holy knight.

The events that led to the complete destruction of the island, as well as the expansion of another Straw Hat's background will not be easy to wait for. The plot has been engrossing, and once this flashback is over, the big battle against Imu will continue, which has us all on the edge of our seats already. We hope that One Piece will make great strides towards exploring the deep mysteries of Shuri and the Holy Knights in the upcoming chapters.
