Magic: The Gathering shared official statements on the game's social media account from the company and artist Dan Frazier. The statement from Frazier confirmed that the long time Magic the artist had painted over Marta Nael's artwork for The One Ring when creating the new alternate art version for The Hobbit. Wizards of the Coast revealed that the full release of the card will include artist credits for both Frazier and Nael, with Nael also receiving compensation from the company for the card. Dan Frazier shared that he has also contacted Marta Nael to apologize for the error in the new One Ring card.

The controversy surrounding The One Ring comes because the card is easily one of the biggest draws from Magicpp The Hobbit crossover. The One Ring was first printed as a Mythic Rare card in The Lord of the Ringslater receiving alternate art versions in bundles for the set and a secret lair. The card even received a special unique Elvish text version, with the serialized One Ring selling for more than $2 million to Post Malone in 2023. The reprinted version of The One Ring will be exclusive to Collector's Booster packs with The Hobbit.
Magics crossover with The Hobbit will feature tons of exciting new cards beyond The One Ring. The expansion will include several Showcase treatments for cards based on the covers of the original novels by JRR Tolkien, showcasing Thorin, the Mountain-King and The Arkenstone. Smaug the Magnificent will also receive a special variant in Collector's Booster packs, with a “glitter of gold” variant limited to only 500 total copies. Wizards of the Coast also confirmed that five new cards in the set will get Dwarven-language versions, with Arcane Signet revealed as the first.
