Early upgrades in Pragmatics shape how you players handle combat and hacking from the start. With Diana's hacking ability directly tied to fights and resources being limited early on, choosing the right upgrades can make encounters much more manageable instead of overwhelming. If you want a smoother start and fewer early game setbacks, here are the best upgrades to prioritize in Pragmatics and why they are important right away.

Best early upgrades for the device printer in Pragmata
The Unit Printer terminal at Shelter handles most of your equipment and ability-based upgrades in Pragmatics. You must invest Lunafilament and Pure Lunum to get upgrades in the Unit Printer, which can be acquired by exploring different levels and defeating enemies in the game. That being said, here are the best early Unit Printer upgrades you should focus on unlocking first Pragmatics.

Device type |
Upgrade |
Reason to upgrade early |
|---|---|---|
|
Arms |
Shockwave Gun |
It's a shotgun weapon that allows Hugh to dish out massive amounts of damage to enemies at close range. Focus on investing in at least the first two upgrades to unlock the weapon in the loadout and increase its base damage. |
|
Load Piercer |
The Charge Piercer is an energy rifle that can take down most flying drones and robots in one shot from long range. Buy at least one upgrade to unlock it in the gear selection. |
|
|
Riot Blaster |
If you find yourself cornered in a room full of enemies, the Riot Blaster will help you knock back enemies and temporarily stun them with its AOE blast. It's a crucial weapon that Hugh must have in his arsenal, especially when completing Red Zones. |

|
Hacking |
Multi-Hack |
The combination of Confuse and Multi-Hack will turn your enemies against each other. This is a deadly combination, and these hacking nodes should be upgraded as early as possible to make combat encounters a breeze. |

Abilities |
Quick movements |
Fast Moves is a perfect dodge that is extremely useful when engaged in melee combat. Be sure to purchase this ability from the Unit Printer in Pragmatics as early as possible, allowing Hugh to quickly dodge attacks and slow down time to land multiple shots on enemy weak points. |
|
Appendices |
Repair-Up |
Increases the amount of HP restored using a Repair Cartridge. Since healing items are few and far between, purchasing Repair-Up upgrades will maximize healing from a single cartridge use. |
|
Thrusters |
Thrusters not only allow Hugh to levitate, but also allow him to perform dodges both on the ground and in the air. Upgrade Thrusters early Pragmatics will not only improve your traversal skills across levels, but also give Hugh an edge while dodging attacks in battle. |
|
|
Mod Slots |
Mods add various buffs to Hugh, and players will only be able to use one at first. However, if you upgrade modslots early, you will be able to use multiple mods, making Hugh much more powerful early on Pragmatics. |
There is also a Firmware Updater tab in Shelter that allows players to invest upgrade components to improve defensive stats, damage and hacking efficiency for Hugh and Diana. While it's entirely up to players which stats they want to prioritize based on their build, my recommendation is to balance all stats by investing equal points in each (if you want a more balanced experience with pragmatism).
