Every MTG Universes Beyond Crossover Set, Ranked

Wizards of the Coast originally released Magic: The Gathering crossovers at a slow and steady pace, but four Universes Beyond sets are only coming in 2026, meaning the floodgates have been opened for better or for worse.

If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to all the Universes Beyond sets, listed in order from worst to best, we've got you covered. Each set is ranked based on the originality, quality of the cards, interest in the release, and impact of the cards on the MTG landscape (in the case of Commander/Standard set releases).

Updated on 21 June 2026 by Niall Walsh: The TMNT and Marvel Super Heroes sets have now been added to this list, and we will no longer be adding smaller Secret Lair drops, as WotC has largely ignored counting these as part of Universes Beyond for some time. Should an IP get a Secret Lair but then return for a complete UB set, or additional products, we will then add it to the list.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Complete standard set – 2025

MTG Peter Parker and the Amazing Spider-Man Cards.

Where do we even begin with the Spider-Man set? This disaster of a release didn't even make it to MTG Arena due to licensing issues, leading to widespread confusion in the community. On top of this, what was supposed to be a smaller set became a full Standard Edition, resulting in cards that felt rushed and uninspiring, and failed to synergize well with existing Standard sets or work well as a stand-alone product.

The straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that this set ultimately pushed back the launch of Lorwyn Eclipsed, a much-anticipated original MTG set, and it came in the midst of a huge surge of new products, leaving players feeling burned out and reliant on the prospect of investing in new products so often.

Magic: The Gathering has tons of mechanically unique cards that have only seen one print and there is no guarantee that they will be printed again.

Tomb Raider

Secret Lair Drop – 2023

MTG Lara Croft, Tomb Raider cards and background art.

Coming exclusively as a Secret Lair Drop, Tomb Raider Universes Beyond focuses on the remake games in the long-running Tomb Raider series. The main draw of this Drop is Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider herself. This mechanically unique card focuses on legendary artifacts and lands, returning them from your graveyard and exile them with a discovery counter, a new type of counter that comes with this card. You can then play cards from exile if they have any of these counters.

  • Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
  • Explorer's Heart // The Lost Valley
  • Storms in Yamatai
  • The cruel whisper
  • Totec's Spear
  • Kitezh, Sunken City
  • Treasure tokens

The drop has yet to make it to a Universes Within version, so the only way you can play with the Lara Croft card is if you got it from this drop.

Clue

Secret Lair Drop – 2024

Magic The Gathering Clue Edition Best Commanders Scarlett, White and Lonis.

A rather interesting entry to the Universes Beyond series, Ravnica: Clue Edition is a multiplayer variant of the game, which allows you and three to four friends to get together and try to solve a mystery while playing a game of Magic.

  • Guildmage Boddy
  • Headliner Scarlett
  • Commander Mustard
  • Apothecary White
  • Emissary Green
  • Senator Peacock
  • Mastermind Plum

All the characters from the original Clue game, including Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard, all make their way into the game, this time getting fantastic re-images as if they were characters from Ravnica. Each of these Clue characters is a legendary creature and a mechanically unique card, which complements a host of other mechanically unique cards mixed in the set.

The incredibly popular Vocaloid Hatsune Miku joins Magic: The Gathering's expanded universe with three Secret Lair Drops. Artwork for these drops features artwork from fans around the world, so each card has a unique style and feel.

There is a fourth Secret Lair Drop scheduled for release sometime in 2024, but details on that release are scarce.

All of these drops have either alternate art prints or card re-skins; no mechanically unique cards are among the drops. Interestingly, in the Electric Entourage set there is a Vocaloid named KAITO, who is a reskinned limitless version of Jace, the Unraveler of Secrets and not Kaito Shizuki, the actual character from the magical universe.

There are strong rumors of a new Hatsune Miku Commander deck coming as part of the Secret Lair, which could add to the stock of this Universes Beyond crossover when it releases.

Monty Python

Secret Lair Drop – 2024

The iconic humor of Monty Python and the Holy Grail might not be your first thought when you imagine a Universes Beyond set, but these two Secret Lair Drops feature a total of nine rescaled cards, each depicting a different scene from the film.

Perhaps the deepest cut to any secret lair or universe beyond is the inclusion of Tim the Enchanter, who is a skinned version of the Prodigal Sorcerer. This card was nicknamed Tim because its original artwork resembled the character Tim the Enchanter from the movie.

Ghostbusters

Secret Lair Drop – 2024

Ghostbuster Secret Lair: Slimmer, voracious apparition.

Ten rescaled cards make up the two Ghostbusters Universes Beyond Secret Lair Drops based on the classic comedy film starring Bill Murry, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.

Curiously, Ghostbusters Secret Lairs does not feature any of these actors. Instead, Slimer has five cards based on the gluttonous green ghost, while The Real Ghostbusters Drop is based on the cartoon.

Child's play

Secret Lair Drop – 2024

The Magic The Gathering Secret Lair Card Chucky by Tomasz Zaucki and Thomas Roach.

Horror fans got another Universes Beyond with the release of the Child's Play Secret Lair Drop. This horror film series focuses on Chucky, a doll who becomes possessed by the soul of a serial killer after a voodoo ritual transfers his soul to the doll to escape death.

This five-card Secret Lair features reskinned cards and includes two legendary creatures: Chucky, who is a reskinned version of Kardur, Doomscourge, and then one of Tiffany, who is a reskinned Barragoth, Bloodsky Sire.

21

Spongebob Squarepants

Secret Lair – 2025

SpongeBob SquarePants Magic: The Gathering Cards.

Unfortunately, this SpongeBob-themed secret lair contained no original cards, and while the artwork was fun, it felt more like a money-making meme release than something that would have any long-term impact on Magic.
