Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been on a Game of the Year rampage. It was clear that the game was going to be an all-time classic when the reviews started rolling in, but I don't think even the most optimistic fan could have expected the total dominance it has shown during awards season.
On January 7th, Clair Obscur breathed down Elden Ring's neck, vying for its “Most Game of the Year Awards Ever” crown, with 345, and by January 21st, it had racked up another 100 awards, eclipsing FromSoftware's 435 wins in 2022. Now, BAFTA Awards End Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's final tally is in, and it's won over 500 Game of the Year wins.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's final game of the year is monstrous
Things didn't look good for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at the BAFTA Games Awards. It failed to win in the first seven categories for which it was nominated. It missed out on Artistic Achievement to Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Best Music to Ghost of Yotei and Narrative to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Then the tide turned.
It won the last three awards it was nominated for: Best Debut Play, Performer in a Leading Role (Jennifer English as Maelle) and Best Game. This brings its final figure to 513, according to Resetera's price tracker.
Despite having an award revoked due to its use of generative AI in the early stages of the game's development, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's astonishing results give it 78 more wins than Elden Ring.
This awards season, Sandfall Interactive's blockbuster RPG became only the second game to win all five major Game of the Year awards, taking home the top prize at the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, The DICE Awards, GDC Awards and BAFTA Games Awards. Baldur's Gate 3 was the first to achieve this feat in 2023.
Of course, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also won the most elusive award of them all, TheGamer's Game of the Year 2025, with a record number of votes separating first and second place. Our reviewer, Ryan Thompson-Bamsey, said: “Sandfall Interactive's debut is a triumph. All About Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is either a fresh reboot to soothe the traditionalist's soul or an exciting, bold leap into new territory, and the result is a work of art that drew me in and refused to let go.”
