Prior to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, there had been high hopes that Nintendo would finally add some variant of Trophy/Achievement support to its console, allowing users to chart their victories in the same way that the Xbox and PlayStation do.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, and while Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have some sort of list of completion objectives, the fact remains that there are still no trophies or achievements on a Nintendo console, for better or for worse.
“No,” VP of Gamer and Product Experience Bill Trinen said at the time when asked if the Switch 2 will finally have the feature.
Nintendo has the right to reject performances
Switch 2 keeps the focus on the actual games.
No sense then. RetroAchievements has taken the hard work out of Nintendo's hands and added support for the Wii, Nintendo's seventh generation console that is now officially 20 years old.
The end result is a plethora of digital milestones that you can unlock for some of the Wii's best games.
“Wii is extremely excited to welcome you to our biggest launch ever with over 180 sets! RetroAchievements is proud to announce support for our 53rd console, the Nintendo Wii!” the forum wrote in a post.
It had been two years since the last major release, which coincidentally was the GameCube, and now the Wii has support on the popular online platform, with over 180 sets available.
These sets range from Donkey Kong Barrel Blast to Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and yes, Mario Kart Wii.
“This makes Mii very happy,” one user wrote in response.
Users are already earning RetroAchievements left and right, and more games will no doubt be added to the list. Being a community-driven platform, things can take time, but the fact that over 180 sets are available, including some of the Wii's most iconic games, is a testament to that community.
The Wii is retro, you know
If the 20th anniversary isn't enough to tip you off, let the BBC inform you that the Wii is a retro console, however hard it is.
That makes it ripe for inclusion on a platform like RetroAchievements, even if it doesn't stop the pain of knowing we're officially old enough to remember what it was like to get a Wii for Christmas.
If it's any consolation, GameStop recently “declared” that the Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 all count as retro consoles for its trade-in program. With the PlayStation 4 approaching its 13th birthday, aka, adolescence, it won't be long before we start hearing about the nostalgia for Sony's eighth-generation console.
If you'll excuse me, I have a cane to buy.
