Updated at 8:29 a.m. March 19, 2026: Paramount has now confirmed that Jim Carrey will indeed be back in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as Dr. Robotnik has been shown during the film's first teaser. Sonic is depicted in the first Chaos Emerald, with Eggman appearing in the second.
Shadow also appears in one of the later Emeralds, confirming that he too will return despite seemingly being killed off in Sonic 3 (we knew that one would never last), and I think Amy's cameo is the first time we've seen her outside of Sonic 3's stage. The teaser begins with Amy's hammer shattering the glass and the Chaos Emeralds then flying out of it, an image that further hints that time travel will play an important role in the next film. The teaser also confirms Sonic 4 is still on track to hit theaters in a year, in March 2027.
Original story: There have been rumors and reports that Jim Carrey will somehow return to the role of Dr. Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 since Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was in theaters. Those rumors just got a little more concrete, as a leaker with a proven track record of insider Sonic knowledge has claimed that Carrey is back in his Eggman gear and on the Sonic 4 set filming scenes for the next movie.
Somehow Eggman came back
DanielRPK, who has revealed accurate behind-the-scenes information about the Sonic movies in the past, has claimed that Carrey is currently filming scenes for the fourth film in the franchise. No details yet on how Carrey's Eggman will fit into Sonic 4's story, but there are already plenty of theories about the fourth film's potential plot.
If you've seen Sonic 3, you might be wondering how exactly Paramount and Sega plan to bring Carrey back since Robotnik almost certainly died towards the end of the last film. In a rather uncharacteristic move for the iconic video game villain, Robotnik sacrifices himself to save countless lives and perishes in the Eclipse Cannon explosion.
Carrey can't even return to play Robotnik's grandfather, Gerald, who he also portrays in Sonic 3, as he met an even more definitive end when he was thrown into concentrated chaos energy by his own grandson.
Paramount and Sega always give Carrey an out
So, if the Robotnik movie is almost definitely dead, what is Carrey doing on the set of Sonic 4? Well, if you've seen all the Sonic movies, then you know that Eggman “dying” at the end of each movie is quickly becoming a bit of a trope at this point. Robotnik also appeared finished after crashing to Earth with his giant mech at the end of Sonic 2, but was later discovered, hiding away and feeling sorry for himself, at the beginning of Sonic 3.
It appears that Paramount is putting these light outs for Robotnik into all of its Sonic films after Carrey said he would potentially retire after Sonic 2, noting in 2022 that the first sequel could be his last film. Carrey joked that he returned for Sonic 3 because of the money he was offered to reprise the role of Robotnik, and it seems likely that he's got a significant amount of changes going again for Sonic 4.
Bringing Robotnik back from the dead after perishing in a large space station explosion will be much more difficult than reviving him after being lost in a giant mech wreckage. There have been rumblings that the next Sonic movie will draw from Sonic CD's lore, which could mean that time travel will be introduced. It would make it much easier to bring Robotnik back, and possibly drag another version of the villain from another timeline into Sonic's world. We also know we're getting Amy in Sonic 4, a character who made her video game debut in Sonic CD.
