Nilan is one of the first companions you will recruit GreedFall: The Dying Worldand he is arguably the most consistently useful across the game. Two of his three skill trees lean heavily towards support, giving him access to powerful healing abilities, party buffs and status effect management, while his third tree covers his bow skills when none need patching.
He won't compete with your dedicated damage dealers for raw production, but that's not his job – Nilan is here to keep your party alive, and he does it exceptionally well when built right. Below, we'll break down the best skills and traits to get the most out of him.
Best skills for Nilan
Nilan has three skill trees, two of which are support-based; he makes for the perfect healing character, making him an excellent choice for the more difficult combat encounters in the game.

Charity routes
In this way, it is a good idea to focus on buffs. Grab Supporting words and Spiritual Endurance in the first level, Words of retaliation and Transmission in the second level, and make your way all the way up to Avatar of life when you are a high enough level.
For both posture improvements, we recommend you join Healing ability cooldown improvementas this is Nilan's most defining aspect.
We would suggest that First aid is actually not a hard requirement for Nilanand in fact, it can be a negative when you trust the AI to fight for you. Nilan is a character, but First Aid requires him to get close to his ally to heal them, making the skill less practical. The enhancement locked behind the skill is also unnecessary for a good build, so save those skill points for other skill trees.
Bows
Since Nilan is first and foremost a healer, this is the least of it crucial of his three skill trees, but there are some very practical things here. You will probably want to complete the entire first level of skills to give him things to do when no healing is required, especially when they turn Nilan into one decent debuffer with the scourges he can inflict.
It's not a bad idea to skip the Potion Throw if you don't see yourself using the tactical battle mode much; on easier difficulties it's probably an afterthought!
Of the second level skills, if you are torn between them, Disabling Shot is a very easy choice thanks to immobilization being very handy when setting up some distance figures, which Nilan obviously is. Predator's Instinct synergizes wonderfully with one upgraded Coated Arrowalso.
For the weapon skill improvement choices we found that Action score reduction was very handy for freeing up Nilan's Action Points for healing, and applies projection when targets are marked is more available than the Poison/Burning option with the other choice.
Late in the game, Rain of Arrows can be a good skill to pick up, but you have to be careful that it costs a whopping four Action Pointswhich can be risky to spend when those points may be needed for short-term healing abilities. For micromanagement-heavy players, this isn't a problem, but it can be risky for those who rely on AI.
Nilan's road
All skills on this path are worth taking; they make Nilan a much better healer and it includes his bread-and-butter healing skills, Initiate's Healing and Healing Wave. These should be priorities, followed by Stone Skin and Natural Harmony when you hit the level thresholds to unlock them.
Best attribute of Nilan
As a ranged healer using a bow, Nilan's most important stat is Perceptionwhich will increase his damage.
Whenever you can't increase perception higher, you want to balance his stamina and focus, with greater emphasis on focus. As a ranged character, Nilan should take less damage anyway, and if he improves his focus, he'll be able to use more skills more often.
When you have Perception and Focus maxed and Endurance at a healthy place, feel free to start investing in Agility for nice dodge chances and intangible affinity.
