Why Pokemon Winds and Waves fans hope Pombo is a Fire/Fairy type

Pokemon winds and waves are slated for release in 2027, contrary to popular belief that they would be released in November 2026 to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary. But unlike most reveal trailers, this one for Pokemon winds and waves gave an in-depth look at the world and capture mechanics, rather than just showing the three starters. Speaking of which, Pombo is clearly the current fan favorite based on social media reactions, but it could also be the top pick if it turns out to be a Fire/Fairy type Pokemon when it evolves.

There are various reasons why Fire/Fairy type Pokémon would be exciting, and Pombo could be a great candidate for this unique type combination. New generations usually introduce at least a few new type combinations that never existed before, and with so few left to use at least once, Fire/Fairy could finally become real for the first time. The fact that this would be an entirely new type combination alone is good reason to celebrate its potential introduction, but should it fall on Pokemon winds and waves' Pombo to be the first representative, it could be an even bigger deal.

There is a reason why Pokemon winds and waves' The Pombon is already so popular, and that's because it repeats the same successful formula as the Gen 9: a Fire-type starter motor that's adorable, but also fundamentally a bit silly. Fuecoco did this perfectly, and it was tied for the most popular appetizer of its generation, although Sprigatito is just as cute and also a cat. This already makes Pombo a favorite among many fans, and giving it a brand new type would be the cherry on top.

More importantly, a Fire/Fairy type Pokemon would simply be overpowered. Unless it gets horrible stats and/or moves, a Fire/Fairy Pokemon would:

  • Hit Fighting, Bug, Steel, Grass, Ice, Dragon and Dark for super effective damage

  • Resist Combat, Fire, Grass, Ice, Dark, Fairy, and Insect for 50% to 75% damage reduction

  • Be immune to dragon type moves

  • Only be weak to poison, ground, rock and water

  • Has no 4x weaknesses

  • Being able to deal massive damage to some of the best Pokemon in Scarlet and VioletVGC era, as:

    • Miraidon

    • Rilla boom

    • Coraidon

    • Zacian

    • Raging Bolt

    • Amonguss

    • Urshifu (both styles)

    • Iron hands

    • Kingambit

    • Dragonite

    • Iron crown

    • Regidrago

Why Pombo should be Fire/Fairy in Pokemon Winds and Waves

Giving a starter like Pombo the first Fire/Fairy type combo would have other consequences as well. An example is how the starters enter Pokemon winds and waves might end up with a different and more refreshing type trifecta for their secondary types that don't involve Fighting or Dark for a change. Not only that, but there are hopes from fans that Pombo will also stay on all fours.

Since Gen 10 games are set in a region inspired by Southeast Asia, there's a chance that Pokemon winds and waves' Pombo's final evolution will be inspired by the legendary Barong, a being seen as the king of spirits and pure representation of good, standing against the demon queen. This would be a perfect fit for the first Fire/Fairy type, and it could end up killing two birds with one stone by also giving fans a final Pombon evolution that remains quadrupedal.

Whether this turns out to be the case, Pokemon winds and waves' region is likely to be home to several new type combinations, although Fire/Fairy does not appear among them. But if it does, there are several good candidates for inspiration in Southeast Asian folklore and myth, even if Barong is not selected, or if it has no ties to Pombon. However, it would be amazing if it did, and it would make the beautiful Pomeranian-like animal all the more lovable.
