Pokémon GO players will have a chance to meet and capture Mewtwo as part of an upcoming limited event for Pokémon30th anniversary. Pokémon GO will end its Precious Paths season on March 2, making way for its long-awaited Memories in Motion era. An exciting month is approaching Pokémon GO players, with a fan-favorite Legendary monster making a comeback after four years.
2026 is a big year for Pokémon GO. Aside from the game's 10th anniversary, Pokémon franchise itself recently turned 30. To celebrate the milestone, Pokémon GO revealed their Anniversary All Out event for March 7 to 9. According to developer Scopely, “almost all” Pokémon that have been released in Pokémon GO will play in the wild. This will give fans a chance to complete their Pokedex by catching creatures that would otherwise be too hard to find. However, the event has exceptions, as Pokemon like Kecleon, Smeargle or Scatterbug will remain locked behind special mechanics. Some mythical and legendary monsters, such as Cosmog, Zygarde, and Mewtwo, are also part of this list. Fortunately for players, the latter returns to Pokémon GOand fans don't have to participate in Raids to catch it.
Pokemon GO's new and returning player experience isn't great, but Niantic wants to fix it
In a recent interview with GameRant, developer Niantic confirmed plans to improve the game's new and returning player experience moving forward.
Pokemon GO Confirms Free Mewtwo Encounter for Pokemon 30th Anniversary Event
From Tuesday, March 3 to Monday, March 9, Pokémon GO will hold its own Pokémon 30th Anniversary Event, which includes a limited-time GO Pass that leads to an encounter with Mewtwo. If they're lucky, fans might even come across a shiny Mewtwo. Completing tasks and progressing through the GO Pass will also grant players encounters with Kanto Pokemon and Candy. Additionally, fans can purchase the GO Pass Deluxe starting at $7.99 to receive additional rewards such as Mewtwo Candy XL, Legendary Bird Trio encounters, and Rare Candy. It was previously revealed that Mewtwo would return for Pokemon GO Fest 2026, which is expected in June. It looks like players won't have to wait too long anymore for the Legendary Psychic type.
The event will also see all Pokémon from Kanto spawn in the wild, excluding Mewtwo, Mew and regional Pokémon. It's worth noting that the Kanto forms Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres will also appear in the wild, despite normally being locked behind Raids. Reaching GO Pass Tiers 1 and 2 gives fans valuable bonuses such as double Catch Candy and double XP respectively. To help players complete GO Pass faster, there will not be a daily limit on GO Pass points from March 7th to March 9th. Also, fans should be on the lookout for Pokémon GO Raids, as 1-Star Raids will feature Pikachu wearing Red and Leaf's hats, and 3-Star Raids will see Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise. Finally, Ditto will change into many different wild Pokemon.
It's common for Legendary Pokemon to be event exclusives, but many tend to return within a few months. However, while Shadow Mewtwo was featured in a limited event in 2024, its original form has not returned to Pokémon GO since 2022. For players who previously missed out on catching Mewtwo, the upcoming 30th Anniversary GO Pass may be their best chance to add Legendary.
On the other hand, some players believe that the game may finally release Mega Mewtwo X and Y later in the year. Pokémon GO recently introduced Super Mega Raids, tougher Raids that allow fans to catch stronger Mega Evolutions like Mega Victreebel and Mega Dragonite. Since Mewtwo will be a part of GO Fest 2026, there is a chance it could be added to Super Mega Raids. In the meantime, fans can look forward Pokémon GO's Memories in Motion season, which will run from March 3 to June 2 and will debut several new Pokémon.
