This Pokémon runs around energetically while photosynthesizing using the leaves on its forehead. It's lively, but it can also be a bit clunky. |
The area below the neck glows faintly from the heat-generating organ in its lungs. This Pokemon is fuzzy and friendly. |
This Pokémon shoots springy balls of water from its tail. Gecqua is highly intelligent and skillfully maneuvers while turning on air. |
Browt's listed ability is Overgrow, the long-lasting starter pokemon ability that powers up Grass-type attacks when the user is in a pinch, namely when its HP drops below a third of its maximum. In practice, it makes late turns more dangerous for opponents if Browt is still standing and can fire grass-type moves. Pombon, meanwhile, has Blaze, which is essentially Overgrow for Fire-type moves, increasing their power when HP drops below a third. Likewise, Gecqua has its own motion enhancer in the form of Torrent.
With Overgrow, Blaze and Torrent all confirmed as part of Pokemon winds and waves starter's arsenal, it appears that the Generation 10 games are sticking to the traditional baseline package of first-partner mons. That direction suggests that their early balance will also be close to previous generations, at least until evolutions, hidden abilities, and potential new mechanics begin to reshape the starters' roles.
Mainline Pokémon RPGs have long been known for their accessibility, so there's no reason to think any Generation 10 starter will be unsuitable for the full game. That said, they may not be as effective to begin with. Considering how type weaknesses work, the opening part of the Pokemon winds and waves could effectively present easy, medium, and hard starting options, depending on the hard-to-fight types of early-game Pokémon. Either way, it's too early to tell what that balance will ultimately look like. Since the Generation 10 titles are based on Indonesia and Southeast Asia in general, they can feature a large number of Water-type Pokemon, potentially giving Gecqua the most competition among the newbies. The newly released information panels offer no hints about the evolutionary lines of the three starters.
Pokemon winds and waves was announced with a release window of 2027. The absence of a more specific time frame suggests that a launch in the second half of the year is more likely than the first. That would be consistent with The Pokemon Company's long-standing tendency to release a new main line Pokémon games during or just before the holiday season.
