Dataminers have discovered an unused texture in Red Dead Redemption 2 that suggests Rockstar planned to hide a reference to Grand Theft Auto 6.
As anyone who has followed the mystery of the cobwebs and telegraph poles knows, Red Dead Redemption 2 still has plenty of secrets up its sleeve. Rockstar's Wild West magnum opus has fed us constant discoveries and Easter eggs in the nearly eight years since it first launched, and it doesn't seem like it's slowing down.
While the spiderweb mystery is one that still remains in the game and was meant to be discovered, data miners have recently uncovered another interesting detail that has gone unnoticed all this time. And, surprise, surprise, it appears to be a reference to GTA 6 which was ultimately cut from the game for some reason.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Almost referenced GTA 6 four years before it was confirmed
That Or Rockstar just stuck with the name Leonida
On Twitter, GameRoll_ shared an interesting discovery made by SonekaSpeedruns, who found a partially unused boat texture in Red Dead Redemption 2. The texture shows a list of names that should have been put on ships, including one that will immediately catch the eyes of everyone waiting for GTA 6 – The Leonida.
I forgot how disturbing Red Dead Redemption is
To this day, Red Dead Redemption's final chapter makes me more nervous than most horror games.
For those who don't know, Leonida is the name of GTA's equivalent of Florida, which we are rumored to see alongside Vice City in GTA 6. There is a chance the easter egg is not related, but it seems more likely that Rockstar wanted to put a little tease for their next big project.
It's not like it's the first time Rockstar has done this either. Grand Theft Auto 4 had a small hint of the next game in the series with a “Visit Los Santos” sign at the airport, as well as a plane ticket to San Andreas posted on the Rockstar Social Club. Anyway, the potential reference ended up being cut and has only just been pointed out by fans.
