The next major upgrade to PlayStation 5 Pros AI scaling technology may soon be officially announced. The PS5 Pro was released in late 2024became the most powerful console on the market. However, it struggled to gain traction with an original price of $699.99 despite featuring several improvements to the base PS5 console's technical capabilities.
PlayStation later released a revised PS5 Pro model along with a price increase that brought the console to $749.99. The original update focused on improving the console's power consumption and reducing its overall noise. Since then, the PS5's lead systems architect, Mark Cerny, has confirmed that the model would receive further improvements in 2026. He stated that the upgrades would specifically focus on improving the PS5 Pro's current upscaling technology and graphical prowess.
PS5 Pro is getting an upgrade in 2026
The PlayStation 5 Pro is already an incredibly powerful console, but gamers can expect it to receive a major graphical boost in 2026.
PlayStation 5 Pro is rumored to receive PSSR 2.0 update
PSSR 2.0, otherwise known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is now rumored to be released between January and March of this year. The report comes from Gust_FAN, a Twitter user known for sharing PlayStation leaks and deals, who tweeted the dates and several details about what the potential upgrade could include. Most notably, Gust_FAN has previously tweeted accurate leaks about the PS5's slim design and the 2024 PS5 Pro Technical Presentation where the PS5 Pro model was announced.
The current update is said to boost frame rates for games previously stuck at 70-80 FPS, improve resolutions for classic games, and have improved debugging tools for game developers. The term “classic games” is assumed to refer to the PS4 library, which currently receives select performance and visual enhancements when played on the PS5 Pro. Additionally, the update will implement a new feature that will work similarly to AMD's FSR4, significantly improving image quality and overall performance. The Twitter post did not mention whether the rumored update comes with a PS5 Pro price increase.
If these rumors are true, PlayStation fans should hear an official announcement from Sony sooner rather than later. The debate over whether the PS5 Pro is worth the upgrade has remained prominent among the console's player base. This upgrade could help convert those who are still skeptical, especially if PSSR 2.0 is as powerful as AMD's FSR4. This would help close the performance gap between the current PS5 Pro model and modern PCs with increased upscaling capabilities.
The current console allows gamers to target 4K resolution at 60 FPS or opt for advanced ray tracing with faster loading times. Even with these improvements, industry analysts have confirmed that the PS5 Pro has fallen behind the PS4 Pro's sales numbers. To help boost sales of the improved console, PlayStation may be keen to pair the PS5 Pro upgrades alongside its new exclusive Saroswhich will be released in April. Housemarque has gone on record to confirm that its upcoming title will take advantage of the current PS5 Pro model's features. However, it is not confirmed if the game will support ray tracing. Fans will have to wait and see if all of these rumors come to fruition, but until then, they can look forward to PlayStation's exclusive lineup, including both Saros and Wolverine2026.
